It's women's history month. Let's discuss "imposter syndrome" and why I hate it. "Imposter syndrome" generally means doubting your own abilities and feeling like a fraud. I don't like the term. It only focuses on the individual woman needing to change. It means there is something wrong with how she sees herself and if she just believes more, leans in more, and fixes her thoughts, she is going to be just fine. ✨Systemic bias exists. ✨Wage inequality exists. ✨Racism exists. ✨Sexism exists. ✨Job tracks exist. ✨Household labor inequity exists. We all have room to grow in showing ourselves kindness and power. AND you are not the only problem. Let's fix the system because the women aren't the ones that are broken. #mentalhealthatwork #womensmentalhealth #impostersyndrome #workculture
Disability also exists.
The system is slowly getting fixed. It hasn't been that long since women were allowed to work, so it will probably take more effort and time to get there.
Powerful point, fix the system and challenge these charged terminologies. Fascinating.
I dislike the term as well. Thank you for sharing!
Yep!
YES! Really appreciate this :)
Thanks Ashley!

1yAshley Junghans-Rutelonis, PhD, LP no sh*t! While I only recently experienced it, switching careers after 59, and then went so far as to label it that, I agree with you that it is isolating and feels like nothing new or revelatory for me to realize I have been going it alone, holding up friends, family, community on survival mode for 3 decades plus amidst all the challenges you named. Not one more hurdle to clear, but a reinforcement of what it’s like to face the cumulative effect of merely surviving, thinking I was thriving.
