Private 5G Networks - Still a dream in the drawer? By time to time we hear and read complaints about the very slow pace of development for 5G NPN - Non Public Networks, particularly in Europe. From available evidence the hunger is there for efficient wireless connectivity including all the nice, enterprise-tailored features that come with R17 and beyond. So what? Apart from the 3GPP release progress and its reflection as real availability of specific feature-capable networks, one big single blocking factor is spectrum availability and licensing in several Countries, which makes the equation almost impossible to solve - at least for the time being. Big players should lobby and press on their Ministries of Economic Development to accelerate the release of spectrum segments for exclusive and confined use with practical "Campus" or "Island" approach, no matter whether small or large. This would finally be the catalyst for kicking-off commercial deployment beyond the level of a case study.

The collaboration between Ericsson and MediaTek to achieve an industry-first, 3GPP-compliant data call on the 6 GHz 5G NR spectrum is a significant milestone in the development of the global 5G ecosystem. In my opinion, this collaboration not only marks a technological achievement but also highlights the industry's recognition of the importance of mid-band spectrum for the future of 5G. The successful interoperability test sets a positive tone for the discussions at WRC-2023 and reinforces the potential socio-economic benefits that can be unlocked by making the 6 GHz spectrum available for mid-band expansion in 5G networks. #TeamEricsson #6GHz #MediaTek #WirelessTechnology

We recently attended the network meeting for wireless communication systems in industrial environments at the SmartFactoryOWL, Lemgo. Experts, specialists and end users came together for a day at the invitation of Fraunhofer IOSB-INA to discuss current trends and topics. Among other things, there were lively discussions about the coexistence of different wireless technologies in the industrial environment. The HMF team had brought along the 5G Smart Box, a fully comprehensive 5G system for a wide range of Industry 4.0 applications. One of our current research projects on the future of mission-critical communication was also presented at the network meeting: Together with Fraunhofer IOSB-INA, the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences and other partners, we are currently working on the TETRA++ project. We are testing the interoperability, availability and scalability of mission-critical communication via 5G in two real applications. The Qualcomm 5G Primer course by Nakul Navarange provides a comprehensive overview of the fundamentals of 5G technology. Through this course, I am learning the basics of wireless and cellular communication, as well as the evolution of 5G network technology. The course delves into the 5G NR vision and the key enabling technologies behind it, such as advanced channel coding, massive MIMO, mobile mmWave, and more. Additionally, it covers the important networking features of 5G and how the mmWave spectrum is utilized. The course also explores the exciting applications of 5G in smart cities and connected vehicle technologies (C-V2X). By the end of this course, I expect to have a solid understanding of how the different aspects of 5G are applied in real-world scenarios and the transformative potential of this next-generation wireless standard.
