Retrofit at scale is an intimidating challenge to address. In 2022 excess deaths in the UK due to heatwaves was a record 4,507 people - predominantly those who were vulnerable and less well-off. The impacts of excessive cold are significantly greater. Retrofitting homes for improved health, climate resilience and comfort is our challenge. The cholera epidemics of 1849 and 1853 resulted in the deaths of 25,000 Londoners. Joseph Bazelgette’s spectacular design and engineering feat to retrofit London with 82 miles of main sewer and 1100 miles of street sewers virtually eliminated cholera, typhus and typhoid. Retrofitting our built environment and energy infrastructure requires a similarly ambitious plan to tackle the health emergencies brought by substandard housing, fuel poverty and increased costs of living. Doing this will prevent illness, improve health and productivity, reduce running costs and wasted energy and provide a huge economic boost. The challenge and the opportunity of a generation? I think so.
