A big “thank you” to Air & Cosmos for featuring this article about projects having the audacious ambition of contributing to the reduction of global warming. Setting precise environmental objectives as primary specifications of a new space system, transforms the system design approach. “Environmentally driven” design is producing new methods, new expertise, and different ways of assessing the value of a space system. As an example, on the project ASCEND (*), we are assessing with energy experts whether or not placing a major energy consumer in orbit could contribute to our net-zero carbon emissions objective. I hope these new tools for assessing space systems will be beneficial for future programs. (*) Advanced Space Cloud for European Net-zero and Data sovereignty

Last week in Milan, we have been invited to give our contribution to the Bocconi’s SEE LAB Annual Conference. We have focused our attention to the upcoming 75th International Astronautical Congress 2024 (#IAC-2024), which will take place here in Milan, October 14th to 18th. It will not be merely a Congress; it is an excellent opportunity for the global space community to convene and delve into the binomial #Sustainability and #Space. Indeed Responsible Space for Sustainability is the motto of #IAC-2024. Satellites and space services are becoming vital to our security and social well-being. As the Earth becomes more dependent on Space, it increases also our responsibility for the long-term sustainability of our activities outside of the atmosphere. Why Leonardo? - Sustainability and Space are two outstanding key words of our Industrial Plan. Today with our Space Division, we are integrating digital and space technologies, to develop new solutions that make a concrete impact on our daily lives allowing, for example, the monitoring of critical infrastructures, more timely emergency services and more reliable climate change models; as well as contributing to the Space Situation Awareness activities, and In Orbit Services developments. With the expected richness of presence and contributes, #IAC-2024 in Milan will be a great opportunity to contribute to a sustainable future for our planet and space. See you soon in the City of Milan, which is per se a global hub of innovation, sustainability, and culture.

🚀 The first launch of Ariane 6 is targeted for July 9, 2024 from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana, as announced this morning by ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher and members of the Task Force at the #ILA Berlin Air Show. With 30 missions in our order book, Ariane 6 has already gained the trust of institutional and commercial customers. We are preparing to make Ariane 6’s second launch by the end of the year, followed by a steady rise to around ten launches a year once we reach cruising speed. It represents a splendid challenge for ARIANESPACE and our partners. Together, we will continue to push the boundaries of space #exploration and ensure Europe's autonomous access to #space. ----------English version of previous post And another business sector! The space industry is leading the way in integrating environmental considerations. Many challenges are on the agenda, including major issues such as space pollution and the danger of space debris and systems re-entering the atmosphere. R&T challenges are one-off calls for ideas organised to complement the CNES R&T system on technical subjects of interest. The aim of these challenges is to stimulate the emergence of innovative solutions for the space sector, with an opening to new players, whose development can be pursued via Research and Technology. "Taking environmental issues into account is crucial. Through this challenge, CNES aims to give a new momentum to innovative solutions that will drastically reduce the environmental impact of the design, development and operation of space systems. As this is an issue common to both orbital systems and space transportation, this challenge is being co-organised for the first time by these two teams working to prepare for the future. We should also highlight the substantial budget allocated by CNES, which is commensurate with the challenges and ambitions in this area", say Céline Angélélis, Deputy Director for the Preparation of the Future of Orbital Systems and Ursula Aniakou, Deputy Director for Future Projects and Innovation in Space Transport Systems. A congratulations to Airbus Defense & Space, Thales Alenia Space, Mecano-ID and IRT Saint Exupéry who are entering into a contract with CNES to start their developments to face the current climatic and environmental challenges. Bamboo will soon be taking its first trip into space 😉 #space #sustainability #pollution #BambooisGrowing #1000solutions https://lnkd.in/eJ5eST3V

It looks like EUMETSAT has decided to launch Meteosat MTG-S1 on a spacex falcon 9 instead of Ariane 6. This is quite a brutal change as the flight was supposed to take place very soon. Clearly, today is a very disappointing day for European space efforts. The technical conditions were met for a launch on Ariane 6 and the launcher was indeed available. I am impatiently waiting to understand what reasons could have led Eumetsat to such a decision, at a time where all major European space countries as well as the European Commission are calling for launching european satellites on European launchers ! Not mentioning the fact that we are 10 days away from the maiden flight of Ariane 6. How far will we, Europeans, go in our naivety? This illustrates, once again, the ardent need for strong European coordination on space. It is time for the European Commission to take the necessary measures so that all European institutional satellites are launched on small and large European launchers. https://lnkd.in/eFJd76_Q Phil Evans Thierry Breton Paul Bate Walther Pelzer Teodoro Valente Juan Carlos Cortés Pulido Josef Aschbacher
