Please join the Nu Beta Sigma Alumnae chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated and the Swim Strong Foundation our Annual Swim 1922 Water Safety Clinic on Saturday, May 18th, 2024. We will have a wet clinic for participants ages 8 to adults on the importance of water safety skills. We will provide CPR training that will lead to receiving a certification. We will also give a way summer swim lesson scholarships. SWIM 1922, in partnership with USA Swimming, is one of SGRho’s national programs and is targeted at reducing the drowning rates of African American and Hispanic children. One way our sorority and chapter have leaned in to support this effort is by hosting swim clinics to teach youth about water safety. In turn, it is our hope that this engagement and exposure will reduce the number of African American and Hispanic youth’s fear of water and increase their knowledge and participation in swimming. Did you know? According to the CDC, approximately 10 people drown every day in the U.S.A. An even more startling fact is that 70 percent of African American children and 60 percent of Hispanic children in the U.S. do not know how to swim. https://lnkd.in/gEVtaKRr

These are some great recommendations, but there are some other important safety tips missing. 1. Parents should be watching their children when they are swimming in the pool. The lifeguards are watching everyone, NOT just your child. 2. Teach your child how to recognize a lifeguard and how to call for help if they need it. 3. Teach your child where the shallow end of the pool is and where the deep end of the pool is. 4. When playing with flotation devices parents should supervise their child and check around and underneath the device as these can turn into blind spots for the lifeguards scanning the pool. 5. Lifeguards are the authority of the pool. Just because they are younger than many adults, they are the individuals who attended a 32.5 hour training and hold a certification. 6. When a lifeguard blows a whistle to clear the pool. CLEAR IT. Don’t ask questions, just do it! This allows the lifeguard easy access to the victim. 7. Teach your children to not play breath holding games, swimming under the water without taking a breath, or climbing on other swimmers. 8. How are “survival swim lessons” problematic? 1.) Provides parents a false sense of security. Very rarely have I seen children whom have completed a survival swim lesson session, who have retained the skills that they have learned (i.e. flipping over and floating). Why invest into a program that doesn’t teach your child the basic of swimming strokes, limiting your child to only doing the very basic of skills? 2.) Survival swimming franchise curriculum makes it difficult for children to learn strokes-therefore not allowing them to become water competent. 3.) Survival swimming franchises openly practice discriminatory vetting practices towards medically complex, developmentally and physically disabled children. Refusing to work with them without providing solutions for the most statistically vulnerable drowning populations. 4.) Curriculum a.) Is not productive b.) Instills an exaggerated fear of water c.)
