Out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks...what a great time this past week/end at #techsgiving! I enjoyed connecting with everyone, and definitely felt inspired to ponerme las pilas and continue sharpening my skills. I am grateful for everyone that connected with me and gave me insight for my own career. Here are some key takeaways from the summit that I think can benefit anyone looking for a new challenge/role at work or in your personal life. From Byron Jenkins' talk about Leveling Up Your Tech Career: My Experience & Advice: 1) Understand your team/organization and the system you're contributing to. 2) Get experience with different tools and proactively expand your skill set. 3) Document your achievements, and showcase your work often. 4) Volunteer to take on difficult, unfamiliar or unwanted tasks. From Darius Robinson's talk about Mastering the Tech Job Search: 1) Find a way to engage with the roles that you want. This could be joining groups, attending events, or meeting regularly for "knowledge transfer sessions" as mentioned in Byron Jenkins' talk. And finally, from the Data Science Intro by Justworks with Christian Waibel: 1) If there is a platform or technology that you want to use or become more familiar with, find and develop a use case for it. It could be for something at home/daily life, or a task or goal at work. Again, thank you to everyone who connected with me, and to #techsgiving for putting on such a great event!

How to win tech talent for the public sector? On Tuesday my colleague Julian Kirchherr and I hosted a great innovation circle full of discussion and exchange around this topic – with many different perspectives joining us: Manuel Dolderer, founder of CODE University of Applied Sciences excited the group about the approach of teaching trough real-life projects and mixing diverse groups of students to also benefit from each other. A few of his students shared their perspective – most notably the view that they hadn't even thought about the public sector as a potential employer as they were not aware of the opportunities to contribute and shape tech solutions in the context. The discussion also highlighted the idealistic nature of many software engineers. They crave an environment that presents a constant stream of challenges, allowing them to grow both professionally and personally. The public sector, with its diverse range of projects and initiatives – and not to forget big(!) computers – could provide that - but is not visible (and often not fast) enough. Next up, Julian Hollender, who shared his experiences of attracting tech talent at AOK meinLeben. Some key success factors that have been essential to build up this digital : - Having – and communicating – a clear and captivating purpose in the healthcare system while having really big technical challenges to solve that are every tech candidate quickly understands - A fast recruiting process, that takes only 4-6 weeks from application deadline to contract conclusion. - Actively hiring across Germany, offering flexible work arrangements with one week per month on-site in a much valued on-site team experience One of the major challenges the whole group could agree with was finding and recruiting IT security experts and data protection specialists. The evening was a testament to the fact that the public sector holds immense potential for tech talent. There's an opportunity to bridge the gap and bring more visibility to the opportunities – not only exciting because of the topics to work on, but also the tech challenges and tech environment to work with. Thanks a million to Julian, Manuel and the CODE University of Applied Sciences students who shared their views. And great to see Julia, Björn, Sina and Thomas in Berlin! Looking forward to the next innovation circle coming up! #TechTalent #PublicSector
