Preserving and extending the life of high value oil and gas wells involves regular maintenance and capital investment. Malfunctioning valves present a range of problems, from difficulties with wellbore access to fluid loss, loss of primary well barriers, and potential production shutdowns. In this example, an operator in Trinidad & Tobago utilised EV’s Optis technology to help evaluate the integrity and function of a Surface-controlled Subsurface Safety Valve in their gas well. The safety valve in the 7-inch tubing was leaking and several inflow tests were performed and confirmed the leak rate exceeded the operator’s integrity standards. With the integrity of the well at risk, the operator needed a complete understanding of the situation downhole. WT Bell Expansion Charges were used to stop annular flow/pressure in the 7 in. X 10.75 in. annuli of three Illinois gas storage wells drilled in the early 1960s. Six 5.7-in. OD, 165-g Expansion Charges were shot in two intervals in two wells and three Expansion charges in the third well. Workover Solutions reported that all three pipe expansions were successful – no pipe damage and leaks stopped with much less operational risk, rig time, and OPEX than any other method. #wellintervention #perforating #gasstorage
