Hoopers is a dog sport which provides a low impact alternative to the more widely known sport of agility. Haven't we all watched spellbound as the dogs race against the clock, throwing themselves at the equipment in an endeavour to beat the last handler and dog completing the course. Yes, its fun, its also a physically demanding sport for the dog. Did you know that its advisable to avoid agility and similar dog sports that involve high impact on young joints which is sustained when jumping. Well, there is great news to follow. Hooper's courses do not involve jumping, they are set out in a manner which is kind to the canine athletes who are guided around the course by their handlers. For handlers this is not a physically demanding sport as long distance handling is the key to a great round. So...YES, you figured it out already! Here’s how a professional dog musher taught me about choosing the right people to work with… 🐕 When I was in Alaska I met a man who was a professional musher for a dog sled team. He was a 3-time Iditarod champion 🏆 and even had the record for fastest Iditarod run: 938 miles in 8 days, 3 hours, 40 minutes, and 13 seconds. It’s a grueling race and quickly separates the good mushers and dogs from the great ones. But while we were talking, my family and I asked him an important question: ▶ How do you choose dogs for the race? ◀ He said that the dogs he chooses for his team are all completely different. Some are calm - peaceful - reserved. Others are wild - obnoxious - loud. Some are natural explorers and others like routine. Some have darker coats and some are pure white. Some are female and some are males. Some love to eat and others like to nap. But they ALL shared the exact same trait: When you put a harness on them… they NEVER let the ropes go slack. It was incredible as we got on a sled of our own and saw a few of the elite dogs that NEVER let the ropes of their harnesses fall - even when they were parked and at rest. Constantly pulling. Constantly tight. Constantly urging the sled to where the leader directed. - When we’re developing professional relationships and when we’re choosing who to work with… We should look for the people who keep the harness tight. They can come in all shapes and sizes. They can like to explore or they can like routine. They can like to eat or they can like to nap. As part of the Corporate Business Development team, I am focused on identifying opportunities with properties/rightsholders for any of Playfly’s Value Creation Services. This requires a lot of outreach and conversations to share Playfly capabilities and recent successes while also getting properties to openly share where they have blind spots and could use help. I also spend a lot of time communicating with Playfly business leads to make sure we are representing their narrative most effectively out in the marketplace. How do you like to spend your time outside of work? When we are not at sporting events in the Mid-Atlantic region with our two children (ages 13 and 12) we love to be home with our very large network of family and friends. My wife and I live in the same town that we grew up in and have a large extended family between us. Also, I love to do landscaping at home…perfect lines in the lawn deliver so much satisfaction. Lastly, I enjoy grilling and smoking food…and staying hydrated while doing it. Favorite movie and/or TV show? Movie: Godfather I, II, III TV Show: Diners, Drive-ins & Dives (I could watch it for hours) What destination do you hope to visit one day? I hope to visit the Far East someday. If you could learn a new skill/hobby, what would it be? I would love to know how to play guitar. Fun or interesting fact about you? This Friday Fun is all about creating Family Fun this weekend with low costs in mind. Here are some ideas. 1. Find a local park to go and explore. Be sure to pack snacks and maybe even a lunch to save on those hunger cravings! Check out Alltrails.com for some ideas. (You won’t have to pay a subscription to get basic info.) 2. Ice cream Sundae or Banana Split fun – You supply one flavor of ice cream friends each bring a topping to share fudge, caramel, sprinkles or another flavor of ice cream etc. Kids will love it! You win b/c it’s cheaper than going out to get ice cream and you’re building community at the same time. 3. Farkle – Who doesn’t love a dice good game. This one is about luck and getting a chance to be loud if someone Farkles. (6 dice req.) Pick up a pack of 10 at Target for under $6 this way you have extras in case you lose one. (or pick up the full game for around $8) Hours of fun! 4. Grill out – You supply the grill and then everyone(incl. you) brings there favorite item to grill plus one simple side dish to share. Encourage others to bring their favorite outdoor game and make it a fun filled afternoon. 5. Throw organization out and bring safe fun chaos in, by building a fort indoors. Let the kids use their imagination but be part of the adventure. Maybe even have a movie & eat popcorn in it.
