Today is National Barbie day (US) Barbie was inspired by Lilli, a German doll.From this idea, the co-founder of Mattel toy company Ruth Handler became inspired to create a doll that was a grown woman. In 1956, while on vacation with her family, Handler first came across the Lilli doll and noticed how enamored her 15-year-old daughter Barbara was. Before the creation of Barbie, most dolls were either babies or children. Handler’s vision was to create a doll that had a grown female’s anatomy. Over the next couple of years, Handler worked to design a wholesome, American doll. Named after her daughter Barbara, Barbie debuted at the American International Toy Fair in 1959. Crowds of people instantly fell in love with the doll. The first Barbie doll was available in one body type. More than 60 years since its introduction to the public, Barbie has been a role model and friend to children and adults throughout. Prior to BARBIE's theatrical release I predicted (on FB) that the movie would explode at the B.O. and Mattel's stock would go up as a result due to the movie increasing product sales. The latter is TBD, but this is how I see things playing out: Halloween: Barbie Costumes are all the rage in 2023 Holiday Season: Parents, grandparents, etc buy their young children, grandchildren, etc Mattel products (e.g. Barbies, The Dream House, etc). More people invest in Mattel due to reporting high earnings. Stock goes up. Do you see what I see?? #barbiemania #stockmarket

This is such a fun article about the “strategic” bold steps behind the success of Mattel and Barbie. Ruth Handler was in charge of the business, her husband, Elliot, product development. 3 of her Bold Steps: 1) She realized before anyone in her industry that parents weren’t her target, the children were!!! “Thanks to her, we lost control.” 🤣 2) “The key quality of hers as a leader was the ability to take risks.” She was the first toy manufacturer to advertise directly (via commercials on The Mickey Mouse club) all year, versus seasonally for holidays. 3) Ruth believed in data and sent her “retail detail” to the stores to track the sales data. Everyone else waited 6 weeks for the toys stores to get them to the manufacturers. All of these strategies are still relevant today - focus on your end user, take risk and do different things, people with the data win!

Barbenheimer weekend is finally upon us, and the much-anticipated films have taken over as the zeitgeist of summer 2023. The term "zeitgeist," as many know, has German roots, which is also the case for the subject matter of these movies. While one can guess from the name that J. Robert Oppenheimer has German ancestry, the German connection of Barbie may be lesser known. Barbie is actually based on a doll of the comic-strip character Lilli from the German tabloid newspaper Bild. Ruth Handler, the co-founder of Mattel, saw a market opportunity for a doll representing an adult rather than infants. She came across the Bild-Lilli doll during a trip to Europe and found it perfectly matched her idea. Snatching up a couple, she redesigned the doll and named it Barbie after her daughter, Barbara. Not unexpectedly, a licensee for the patent directed to Bild-Lilli's hip joint (see below) sued Mattel for patent infringement. The case was settled out of court, and Mattel eventually bought the rights to the doll ending the production of the Bild Lilli doll in the process.
