Let's talk about land acknowledgment. 🌳🍁 Recognizing the traditional territories not only shows respect to the Indigenous peoples but also reminds us of our responsibility as custodians of the land - a vital part of Indigenous cultures. However, land acknowledgment is just a first step. True respect involves taking action to support and uplift Indigenous communities: creating educational opportunities, providing equitable healthcare, promoting economic development and upholding Indigenous rights. Only then can we move toward a more inclusive and equitable Canada. #indigenous #indigenouspeoples #landacknowledgement

Today is International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, a time to acknowledge the ongoing achievements and contributions of all Indigenous Peoples to global issues, environmental protection, and advocacy for a sustainable future. This year’s theme, ‘Indigenous youth as agents for self-determination,’ aims to raise awareness of the innovative contributions Indigenous youth have made to provide solutions for a more sustainable future. Guided by our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) and community partnerships, we are taking action to provide meaningful employment and education opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. Clough is committed to supporting the rights and cultures of all Indigenous Peoples. We pay special acknowledgement to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples whose lands we inhabit and operate within, and recognise their ongoing contributions and connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to their Elders past, present and emerging. Happy National Indigenous Peoples Day!🎊🎉 🌍 Why Land and Territory Acknowledgements Matter 🌍 Land and Territory acknowledgements are important because: 1. Recognizing Indigenous Presence: They honour the fact that Indigenous people have lived on and cared for these lands for thousands of years. 2. Showing Respect and Supporting Reconciliation: They are a way to show respect for Indigenous histories and cultures and are an important step towards reconciliation. 3. Educating Ourselves: They help educate everyone about the history of the land and the Indigenous people who have been its stewards. 4. Addressing the Past: They remind us of the impacts of colonization and the importance of supporting Indigenous rights today. 5. Building Stronger Relationships: By acknowledging the land, stronger and more respectful relationships with Indigenous communities can be built. Understanding and participating in land acknowledgements is a small but significant way to show respect and support for Indigenous communities. Let’s take a moment to recognize the land we stand on and the rich histories of its Indigenous caretakers. Today, on National Indigenous Peoples Day, let’s celebrate the vibrant cultures, unique traditions, and invaluable contributions of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people of Canada. Honoring Indigenous Rights: The Importance of UNDRIP Today, I'd like to highlight the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), a landmark document that reaffirms the rights of Indigenous peoples worldwide. As we work towards reconciliation and justice, UNDRIP provides a crucial framework for upholding Indigenous self-determination, cultural preservation, and equitable participation in all aspects of society. In 2007 Canada voted against UNDRIP and it wasn't until 2016 that Canada officially removed its objector status and expressed its support for UNDRIP. However, it wasn't until 2021 that Canada passed the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, aiming to ensure that Canadian laws align with UNDRIP. UNDRIP is more than just words on paper – it's a call to action for governments, organizations, and individuals to: Respect: Recognize and value the distinct cultures, languages, and knowledge systems of Indigenous peoples. Protect: Safeguard Indigenous lands, territories, and resources from exploitation and environmental degradation. Consult and Cooperate: Engage in meaningful dialogue with Indigenous communities on decisions that affect their lives and futures. Redress: Acknowledge historical injustices and work towards healing and reconciliation. Let's all do our part to support Indigenous-led initiatives and amplify Indigenous voices. By embracing UNDRIP, we can create a more inclusive and equitable future for all. #UNDRIP #IndigenousRights #Reconciliation #IndigenousPeoples #Justice #Equality #Diversity #HumanRights

Today, I strongly believe that Indigenous Peoples' Day should be a recognized day off for everyone. After all, this is Native land. As we celebrate the rich histories and cultural contributions of Native Americans and Indigenous communities that have existed here on Turtle Island since Time Immemorial, it's crucial to recognize the importance of this day, beyond the closure of banks and post offices, and what’s his name. Today is also a reminder of the need for reconciliation, justice, and actionable equity. It’s also a day for reflection, family time, rest and connecting with nature. Indigenous Peoples' Day offers us a moment to pause, honor, and deeply appreciate the enduring legacy and resilience of Indigenous communities. It's a day to champion economic investment, environmental protection, and the preservation of Tribal Sovereignty, among other crucial endeavors. Let’s envision a future where this day is recognized as a state and federal day off, dedicated to honoring the original stewards of this land and fostering a more inclusive and equitable society. Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day! 🌎 #IndigenousPeoplesDay #DayOff #NativeLand #TakingSickLeave ##ShoutOutEldersAndOrganizers #LongTimeComing #SocialJustice #Community #ShoutOutIndigenousAroundTheWorld #InSolidarity ##AncestorAppreciation
