Results-Oriented General Manager | Expertise in Team Leadership & Revenue Management | Hospitality Innovator
Boutique hotels I think a lot of people underestimate the amount of work that has to be put into these hotels. People say that the General managers have a easy life; they sit behind desks in offices and review papers; emails and excel sheets. Well yes that is pretty much true of large hotels and mid size hotels. Because you have a team around you who does your reports, deals with guests, makes orders, manages teams and do the bulk of the work. Come to the world of boutique hotels and the roles are pretty much reversed with the roles of GM being far more hands on, involved and being the jack of all trades! First up and last to leave, being everyone’s ears and eyes, socializing with guests and being all for one and one for all. There is far more to being a GM in a small property than there is in running a larger hotel or branded property. If you think it is the easy life well think again and be prepared to work. Independence is great but comes at a cost. You are responsible for everything in more ways than one. I personally love it as it give you the freedom of expression and the challenge to keep you mentally and physically active! This kind of work is the work many wish they could have but are too unsure to do it. If you have lived the corporate way or group driven then boutique is not for you. You have to be #strongminded, #driven, #determined, #disciplined, take the tough with the smooth. #passionate #creative #challenge #focused #understanding #boutiquehotel #owners #independent #hotels #generalmanagers #leaders #boutique

Garin Dart its good to see Hotel Managers standing up for the industry and speaking out so I hope you don't mind me shearing your post . Standards are dropping in many hotels, and the outlook for F&B departments is looking grim. Knowledge is fading, and this decline is affecting overall service quality. General Managers should have the power and autonomy to implement changes and strategies based on their experience to ensure the success of the hotel. By leveraging their expertise, GMs can address challenges. Unfortunately, there's a trend of GMs being placed in positions prematurely. I've observed this on LinkedIn, where some have only worked in two or three hotels. They lack experience in crucial departments like F&B, housekeeping, and kitchens, yet hold the title of hotel manager. It's concerning-I recently met one such manager who lacks the necessary background. Why are they in that position?. I worked for a shipping company 20 years and worked for some very good managers but they was held back from the very top who would not listen to the hotel managers them self's and ideas and what does surprise me from the very top they had no experience in working in the hotel industry them self's. If you employ a Hotel manager you employ them for there experience and drive to make the hotel successfully profitable they now the operation from there experience and a good hotel manager would listen to the hotel heads of department who specialize in their field. It's the same if a GM employs me to do training in the food and beverage department. I would expect them to trust my background and experience to deliver excellent training, without interfering in the process but reporting back when finished.
Hotel companies that hire GM's to run hotels then tell them how to do their jobs? I really dont understand this. Either you have hired the wrong person to run your hotel or you are a really insecure leader. I get there are certain parameters and non negotiable brand standards but setting people up to fail because you dont want individuals to succeed is toxic and has no place in hospitality. Has anyone else experienced this in past positions?
