Happy 4th of July! As we celebrate the birth of our great nation and the freedoms we hold dear, let's reflect on the ideals that the United States of America was created to embody. The freedom to choose one’s own path and destiny, to dream, innovate, and build; the idea that no matter who you are, or where you are from, you have the right to dream, act on those dreams and achieve your dreams. It is not a guaranty of success, but a guaranty of opportunity, the opportunity to apply yourself, work hard and live a better life. Our forefathers came to America from other parts of the world to create and live a different life; not be told they had to believe certain beliefs or live a particular lifestyle. The idea that we treat everyone fairly and with the same rights they enjoyed. They fought for this independence, the right to dream and choose to believe, the right to work hard, take risks, overcome challenges, and realize their visions. America is about many different backgrounds, traditions, ways of thought and belief. It is about honoring and respecting the rights of others, even when we don’t agree with what they think. We can and should, disagree; find the middle ground, compromise. It is this principal of acceptance, compromise and working together that have taken our country from its humble beginnings as colonies, to the forefront of the world and place that people continue to want to migrate to and partake in the “Great American Experiment”. This idea is not an end, as much as it is a journey – a journey of evolution, experiment and collective achievement. Here's to freedom, innovation, and the relentless pursuit of our dreams. Today we commemorate Juneteenth, the national holiday that marks the end of the worst era of our history, an era in which our country failed to live up to the ideals promised in the Declaration of Independence: “…that all [people] are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Though we failed then, today God has graced us with a “do over.” We each can do our part to help our precious democratic experiment live up to her loftiest ideals. It is fitting, therefore, that Juneteenth is celebrated nearly two weeks to the day before the commemoration of our freedom and independence as a nation, allowing us simultaneously to mourn the past, celebrate the present, and commit to doing better in the future. So, the Office for Community Belonging invites you to join us this June 19th, Juneteenth, in reflecting upon how we can each build a stronger, even more inclusive community at Pepperdine and—as a result—a fairer and more inclusive world.

Happy International Day of Families! Today is the annual day of commemoration for one of the most precious things on earth that many of us cherish more than silver and gold: family. This six-letter word is crucial to the favorable development and wellbeing of the one very thing that we can’t do without: life. Whether it be your chosen family and/or biological family, its power and influence to enrich our lives with love, protection and joy is undeniable. The Origin Story As we celebrate the importance of families, it’s equally important to understand the origin of this special day. According to the Economic Times, “International Day of Families, began as a tradition back in the year 1994, started by the United Nations, talks about the significance of families across different and all communities of today's world. This year will also see this day being celebrated in high spirits.” Embracing Diversity + Strengthening Families Let’s give a special round of applause to the United Nations for its pivotal role in developing International Day of Families. I was born in 1962. This is America in my lifetime. Many will argue times have changed. I ask how is change measured? When did perceived changes occur? What caused those perceived changes to occur? What is the condition of race relations today? How do we measure progress? In 1960: Nearly all of America's public schools were racially segregated, with poor children of color ubiquitously served by the worst quality schools in the world's richest nation. Today: Nearly all of America's public schools are racially segregated, with poor children of color ubiquitously served by the worst quality schools in the world's richest nation. In 1960: The Black-White homeownership gap was 26%. Today: The Black-White homeownership gap is 30% In 1960: Banking discriminatory practices were the norm; access to capital for Black Americans was extremely difficult. Today: Banking discriminatory practices are the norm. Citibank published a report declaring that systemic racism in the financial sector has cost the nation $16T in just the past 20 years. The federal government has fined banks more than $243B for discriminatory practices over the past 20 years. 1960: There were fewer than 1 million Black-owned businesses in the U.S., all of which combined produced LESS than 1% of the nation's GDP. Today: There are more than 3 million Black-owned businesses in the U.S., all of which produce LESS than 1% of the nation's GDP. Despite the exponential increase in ACTIVITY, the PRODUCTIVITY of Black-owned businesses continues to lag. Black EMPLOYER firms represent a mere 2% of the total EMPLOYER landscape in America (80% of which are White-owned/controlled companies) The effort in Black America continues to be strong. The talent continues to be strong. The innovation and creativity continues to be strong. And the opposition to Black progress continues to be strong. So, what needs to change? Do Black people need to work harder or do systemic structures that were built on a foundation of white supremacy need to change? After the Civil War, White "Radicals" in Congress changed the laws 8 times, including 3 changes of the Constitution. They established a brand new federal agency (Freedmen's Bureau) and prioritized the economic and political empowerment of Black people for the first time (and only time) in US history. The temporary conditions they provided enabled Black people to build 200 entire towns in the first 20 years after the war. They also accelerated the building of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), 100+ that still stand today. When White people remove the barriers they created to Black progress, then we see rapid progress of which Black Americans are capable. When White Americans blame Black people for lagging under conditions White supremacists established to benefit themselves and their descendants, we see generations of trauma, sustained high stress levels & adverse health impact.

America has massive competitive advantages over other countries as a place to do business. Among them are a stable and predictable rule of law; a pluralistic society; a culture of risk-taking, individualism, and optimism; a belief that everyone has rights that must be protected, that government has an important -- but limited -- role, an idealism that, together, we will build on the advances of the past to create an ever-more free, open, accepting, fair, and perfect union. This July 4th, all of it is at risk. It doesn't have to be that way. The future belongs to those who build it, not to the cynics or the critics or those who say "what does it matter what I do?" America is worth celebrating. Let's celebrate it today. And let's -- each and every one of us -- recommit to the hard work ahead. Happy Independence Day.

📣 A message to young professionals of color: You weren't meant to fit into Corporate America; stand out! Why do I say this? Because the blueprint for success in white-collar America wasn't designed to help us succeed. If anything, it was intended to keep us marginalized. And recognizing this is the first step toward creating meaningful change from within Corporate America. We were born to be cultural disruptors, pioneers, trailblazers. It's time we own it. This is, of course, easier said than done - especially when some BIPOC professionals face more rampant bias in the workplace than others. But, I also know that attempts at assimilation can only lead to feelings of invisibility. Eventually you're forced to split yourself into halves, and code switching becomes part of your survival tool kit. But, you can't thrive in survival mode. For us, the road to success begins with honoring our whole selves, rejecting assimilation and embracing acculturation. Our voice and power will not trickle down from the C-Suite, we must find it in our own unique story and identity. Diversity in the workplace means nothing if you are given a seat at the table only to blend in and nod along silently. We must speak up. If we all do this, it will be like the rising tide that lifts all boats, leading us to a more inclusive future for Corporate America. Need inspiration?
