1yMy angel of a Grandmother had Alzheimer’s take away her memory of a life well lived and the people who loved her. I used to earn my own way to go see she and my Grandfather for the summer and they would take me all over South Georgia, South Carolina, and North Florida. They were up for anything, and we did everything! Those trips were stake-in-the-ground points in my life. In time, we noticed her mind slipping. It started with small, rare moments and they passed by as quickly as they came. She was able to meet and spend time with my two oldest boys and I loved seeing that she loved them as much as she loved me. By the time our third boy was born, she had started going downhill quickly. When number three son was nine months old, he and I took a trip back home. We visited my angel of a Grandmother in the nursing home. She had gotten to the point where she didn’t remember anyone. But that day, she remembered all of us and was able to hold my third son, call him by his name, play hand games with him and tell him she loved him, just as she had done with me and my other boys. That was the last time I saw her. 20 years later, not a day goes by that I don’t think about her.
