Had such a great time networking at last night's WIB-Philadelphia Metro and Life Science Cares Philadelphia event at the Pyramid Club, I forgot to take any photos! So here is a shot of the beautiful City Hall from my walk home. A well hosted event that encouraged genuine connections - I look forward to continuing conversations with the individuals I met last night! I was so interested hearing about the great work in biosciences going on in Philadelphia and the growing space for innovation but also seeing so many different industries and positions co-mingling. Can't wait to join another event soon! #networking #womeninbusiness #lifesciences #professionaldevelopment

When thinking about the life science market, the East or West Coasts may come to mind first. Yet, Chicago is emerging as a significant player, offering innovative companies the space and opportunity to flourish in the Windy City. At the Bisnow Chicago Life Sciences Summit, Skender's Brian Kane moderated a panel discussion that delved into the evolution and prospects of the city’s life science market. The panelists agreed that Chicago is well-positioned for life sciences growth, given the comparatively low cost of living, access to public transportation and close proximity to several large universities. The key to a successful future hinges on relationships. Life science tenants seek support from their landlords as they expand, necessitating flexible, scalable spaces and uninterrupted access to essential power. Landlords who can cater to these needs will be pivotal in nurturing the sector’s growth. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gHK5mKeZ

For the bioscience/biotech community and those intrigued.... here's a fantastic workforce development opportunity taking place next week, Thursday October 26th at BioscienceLA in Culver City. Worth sharing with our WIBs/WDBs, local community colleges, and companies invested in STEM education: Biocom California Institute is holding a half-day Life Science Workforce Symposium that is completely FREE of charge to the public. Mission: To target underserved and underrepresented communities (especially BIPOC and Veterans) and introduce them to what the life science industry is. The goal of this half-day conference is to excite job-seekers and curious minds about career possibilities within our local life science ecosystem, so that they can become a part of our talent/workforce. As you all know, the life science industry often does NOT require a Masters or even a Bachelors degree to begin working in labs and manufacturing facilities (like Takeda and Grifols). Our industry not only boosts the region’s economy, but provides high-paying jobs with benefits while also accelerating life-saving innovation. This Symposium: This event is incredibly unique in that all 3 of Biocom California’s offices (San Diego, Greater LA, and Bay Area) are simultaneously participating in this conference by livestreaming content from each region. We will have opening remarks live in LA from our Institute’s Director of Workforce Strategy & Innovation, Vicki Brannock. We will then watch the live-streamed segment, and following that, we will breakout into our own live/in-person region specific content which is detailed below. 3:00pm – 3:20pm - Navigating the Hiring Landscape – What are employers looking for, and what can they offer me? Jennifer Sandoz, VP of Human Resources, Xencor Samantha Sale, Director of Human Resources, Takeda 3:25pm – 3:45pm - How to Network – The essential soft-skill for business building and professional development Blanca Cohen, Director of Quality Systems, OneLegacy Troy Barring, CEO & Founder, TAB Diagnostics Mentorship Opportunity: After the programming has concluded, we will enjoy a networking reception together and encourage participants to apply for our Fellowship Program. Please see the attached flyer on Mentorship Opportunities. We are currently recruiting life science professionals for the mentorship portion of the Fellowship program, so that they can dedicate time to helping an individual who has expressed real interest in the industry. We want to create more equity for our local communities of Color, Veterans and Military-transitioning, and justice-involved individuals. We need to get the word out so that talent of all ages, educational attainment levels from ALL backgrounds have a chance to understand their opportunties within our local life science ecosystem! #lifesciences For info, contact Pauling Fonville: Pauline@biocom.org

Business Developer, PhD, Registered Technology Transfer Profesional (RTTP) at University of Southern Denmark
Thank you Danish Life Science Cluster for inviting me to speak at WHINN - Week of Health and Innovation today. I shared my top tips to companies that want to collaborate with university researchers: 👉 Step 1: TALK to each other, make sure you understand each other's wishes and requirements and - importantly - the reason for those. It is the understanding of the reasons that makes it possible to square the circle when your wishes and requirements seem to be conflicting. 👉 Step 2: THEN get legal advisors on both sides to help you choose the type of collaboration agreement best suited to your situation. And to help you square those circles. 👉 Step 3: Get to work! I've had a great day making new contacts, finding new synergies with old contacts and even catching up with an old friend. The overall theme of the track Transforming Healthcare Together seemed to be: drink more coffee with other people ☕️

🌟 Chi Onwurah - MP, Shadow Minister for Science, Research, and Innovation: "It's precisely your talent, your experiences, and, importantly, your capacity for innovation that has propelled White City Innovation District to its current success, following the launch of the Hammersmith & Fulham Council's industrial strategy as a truly eye-catching achievement." Last month, the White City Innovation District proudly hosted the #JawdropSummit, a landmark event in the life sciences sector. The summit highlighted the theme of #resilience, addressing it from various angles such as industry challenges, ageing, pandemics, and Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). Among the 10 jaw-dropping moments, here are a few highlights: 1️⃣ Cooperation creates resilience: "For a municipality, resilience spans a host of issues. Stephen Cowan MP of H&F mentioned, 'There’s a common thread, which is if you create a sense of #cooperation, and you create a sense of people being open and willing to understand others, then you’re more resilient'." 🤝 2️⃣ Tough crowd: Leigh Brody from AlbionVC noted, "No one goes into science because it’s easy. Everyone sitting in this room, and who are in this ecosystem, are just extremely #resilient." 💪 3️⃣ On the right track: Steve Bates OBE FMedSci from the BioIndustry Association (BIA) discussed, "The structures in the UK allow the Life Sciences to take risks and be resilient. 'If you’re going to race a racing car around a track, you want it on a track, you want stewards, you’re going to take #risks within a series of parameters'." 🏎️ 🌟 These glimpses are just the beginning of the groundbreaking discussions that unfolded. For a deep dive into all 10 jaw-dropping moments and to fully embrace the spirit and insights from the summit, visit our detailed blog: https://lnkd.in/eNdTpYpw Stay tuned for the upcoming Jawdrop event. The journey of innovation and resilience continues. Don't miss out on the next series of groundbreaking discussions! 🚀 Imperial College London Imperial Enterprise Lab I-X I-HUB Imperial College Advanced Hackspace Department of Chemistry at Imperial College London Imperial Enterprise Oscar Ces Mary Ryan Scale Space

This week we held our first roundtable discussion for our Accelerator and Changemaker members! The discussion is a chance for our members to explore shared challenges, expose insights and make helpful connections with organisations across the world. We used the first roundtable discussion to explore the challenges they face in university-industry engagement and the trends that are shaping their organisations and ecosystems. This will inform the topics of our future discussions. Some key areas that were identified: 🏛 How to coordinate engagement across (complex) universities, without being too prescriptive/limiting and adding more bureaucracy. 👩🎓 Embedding mechanisms to develop early stage career researchers for industry engagement 🏅 Exploring workload models to allow academics the time to collaborate and to reward them for doing it 🤖 The role of universities in defining future trends and needs for industry collaboration 🤝 Developing a unified culture of external engagement, especially for multi-campus universities Thanks to participants: Thomas Korsgaard 🎓 from Aarhus University; Finola Howe from Atlantic Technological University, Chris Lannon and Sandra Crocker from Carleton University; Julian Copes from Coventry University; Ed Hamer and Jo Bailey from Royal Veterinary College, U. of London; Anthony O'Callaghan from Trinity College Dublin and Frances Frith from University of Bristol.
