Free, in-person tickets open for our annual Gray's Inn Reading: Lord Falconer asks, Considering the last decade, has the UK Constitution worked or does it need reform? Book via: https://lnkd.in/eMnAJhSs ..................................... Does the UK’s constitution provide too much freedom for those that wish to abuse it? Specific examples of this might include Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s lawbreaking during COVID, the selection of Liz Truss as Prime Minister, the ability of the Government to force controversial policies (such as the Rwanda Bill) and the sacking of the Cabinet Secretaries and Permanent Secretaries. Or does the UK constitution, perhaps in contrast to that of the United States and many other nation states, provide relative freedom to remove unsuitable political and civil service leaders without relative domestic political trauma?

Simon Harris , the incoming Prime Minister of Ireland , made an important speech over the weekend as part of “ refreshing and rebranding” his political party which belongs to the European Christian Democrat political family. He cleverly highlighted the VALUES as well as the policy priorities that would animate the party under his leadership. Simon Harris has always understood the importance of public communication in politics and he has ensured that he has included people with communications expertise in his inner circle of advisers . He has already demonstrated that he understands the key to a compelling political narrative lies in appealing not just to people’s INTERESTS but also to their “higher order” values ( eg liberty, compassion, enterprise). At the international level we really need a new overarching politocal narrative that can mobilise people everywhere to create a better future for themselves and for future generations. Skilled communicators should be involved in crafting this overarching international narrative which should set out to inspire and motivate particularly young people everywhere to become active in shaping a better and more hopeful future for themselves and their communities! Perhaps this new political narrative could be closely linked to the Sustainable Decelopment Goals agenda and its implementation?

Senate inquiries are a fundamental strength of Australian democracy. Why bother with senate inquiries? To examine if current parliamentary habits, like the access lobbyists have to Australian Parliament House, is serving us well. Did you know 2002 lobbyists have access to the cafes and corridors of Parliament House to influence YOUR federal member and Senators? The lobbyists outnumber elected representatives and their staff and a current Senate Inquiry into 'Access to Australian Parliament House by lobbyists' is investigating how this affects parliamentary decision making. If you like following democracy in real time, you can watch the public hearing in Canberra today when Senators Richard Colbeck, Louise Pratt, James McGrath, Barbara Pocock, Dave Sharma, Jana Stewart, David Shoebridge and Larissa Waters will put questions to experts and industry representatives: https://lnkd.in/g83YxVEy. Any time a House of Reps or Senate Committee hold an inquiry, a webpage is set up. If you have never seen one before, do something different today and take a look! https://lnkd.in/gteHMhMS #democracyinaction #transparency #democracyisaskill

Business as usual isn’t fit for purpose and I’m glad Keir Starmer has called it out. Sustainable business needs a sustainable society to support its activities its a symbiotic relationship fueled by mutual interest. Extraction of limited resources ( including goodwill, trust and permission to operate) isn’t sustainable. We need an economy that is an effective generator of shared wealth and societal cohesion many people realise this which is why Social Enterprises are a fast growing form of commerce contributing to Britains bottom line and a sustainable future for all of us. #socialenterprise #socialenterpriseuk #socialeconomyalliance

'What's with all the dark blue on the map??' my partner asked this morning, glancing at my laptop. And much to his incredulity, I explained that these are all the areas of France where the far right party came on top at the European elections. Growing in the 80s and 90s, there was a sense that things genuinely could only get better. Not because (or not only because) of how bad they were, but because there was a general confidence (naive, perhaps) that society as a whole would gradually aim towards greater justice, fairness and equality. Be it the rise of the far right in France, or the fact that divisive, exclusionary and destructive policies are being put forward with the expectation that they'll appeal to the general public over here in the UK, it increasingly feels like things have a tangible prospect of getting much worse (not quite as catchy, is it...). I know, this is LinkedIn, what's that got to do with the world of work? Well, organisations form their own little ecosystems. Of course, they are significantly influenced by external forces, but also have an opportunity to strive for values and practices of acceptance, justice and sustainability. I see in my research that many people feel these, yet lack the spaces to explore and enact them. So let's not be afraid to rock the boat. It may be the only way to change its course.
