WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT TWO POLICEMEN HAVING A QUIET PINT IN THIS PUB ONE NIGHT IN OCTOBER 1973 WOULD CHANGE MY LIFE.
AND A FEW THOUSAND OTHER LIVES AS WELL.
Market research was pretty new back then and we'd tested Baileys Irish Cream in a few focus groups'
The findings weren't inspiring. So we managed to get a local publican to take a couple of bottles. We called that 'real world testing.'
I'd go in every few days when passing the pub and the dust gathered on the bottles sitting quietly on the shelf. They remained steadfastly unopened.
Then, the day before we went to Dublin to pitch the idea, I called in again.
One of the bottles was missing.
"What happened?" I asked the guy behind the bar. "Oh" he said "two policemen called in for an off-duty pint and one of them spotted the Baileys bottles. He ordered a glass. And during the next hour and a bit, he and his buddy drank the whole bottle. They loved it.."
For me, that was showtime. The trip to Dublin next day was a whole lot more comfortable.
And the rest was history.

PS : I don't think anyone currently at the Allsop Arms has the remotest idea that Baileys started life there. Maybe someone should tell them?
