The Harvard Innovation Labs has accepted its fourth cohort of #climate companies. To date, the Climate Circles Program has incubated 97 climate companies founded by Harvard University alumni and students, and this year’s class features exceptional companies in weather monitoring, innovations in air conditioning, clean ammonia, agricultural efficiencies, electric vehicle charging and more. Earth Day is a time when all of us can reflect and then act on what we can do to help heal our planet. Last Friday, at the MIT Climate and Energy Prize, I saw the fruits of this approach at scale, spending the day with hundreds of other people that have gone all in on climate (like we've done with GreenStory). What a day! The MIT Climate and Energy Prize is a global climate tech competition for start-ups. A big swathe of the Boston climate eco-system (investors, partners, academics, etc.) was there; the real VIPs were the eight young companies that presented on stage for prizes totaling over $130k. They all applied some type of hard science (chemistry was particularly in vogue) to a climate problem. So many thoughts, but three stand out: 1) We’re in a time where many of the world’s best young minds are harnessing their abilities to build companies that address climate change. There was great diversity among the teams on all fronts, which made for amazing companies. 2) Story matters. I sat in awe of the teams getting up there and presenting in front of a large crowd (including a global on-line audience). All of them did a nice job telling their story. The ones that won did the best job. Story is critical for many things – it’s particularly helpful when you’re trying to differentiate yourself in a short amount of time among a group of super impressive competitors. 3) This was a phenomenally well run event. A group of student volunteers from MIT put the whole show together. The Engine was the ideal venue, the crowd was electric, everything went off on time + without a tech hitch and the food was tasty. And in a scheduling masterstroke, they asked Spencer Glendon to speak right before the awards were announced – he provided the perfect context for why all these efforts matter from a human level. Congrats to all the companies, including AeroFlux, Coflux Purification, Ekidos Agrivoltaics, Vertical Horizons, Wankel Energy Systems and the three winners: Helix Carbon, Andros and Agteria Biotech! #climate #storytelling #MIT #entrepreneurship #startups #climatetech

🌳 Damn those tree huggers. They were right. (So says the tree hugger writing this post…) First, here's the scary part... “July will likely be the world's hottest month on record and possibly the warmest in 120,000 years, according to climate scientists.” (source) Now for a reason to sigh in relief… Aside from the VC-backed innovation in climate tech startups, we have lots of proven tools that work today. Urban trees, for example. And for many who enjoy their shade, they could give a rat’s arse about climate change. But they appreciate lower AC bills, fewer heat-related health incidents, and more beautiful cities. And that’s totally cool. 🎙️💡 A few notes from the past few recordings with our guests on the CleanTechies Podcast that I wanted to share: Shoutout to Jamil Wyne from Climate Tech Bootcamp and Chris Richardson from ADL Ventures, Uptake Alliance for the great conversations!! ➡️ Climate is like lacking a stock market 📉 Strategies used in scaling companies in geographies without a stock market has struggles similar to scaling climate solutions where the path to scalability & IPO is muddled - this parallel makes studying companies successful in said geographies relevant case studies for climate ➡️ Capital can be the wrong incentive ❌ Capital being the end goal of a deal can sometimes be the wrong incentive causing founders to focus on short-term "sexy" metrics rather than improving the core technology long-term ➡️ PhDs need to liftoff quicker 🚀 One of the largest challenges for deeptech is expediting the process for PhDs to commercialize their technologies coming out of universities - this is an opportunity for VCs to invest in breakthrough technologies with more equity in turn for taking on this risk ➡️ Arenas and venues are top underutilized assets for electrification ⚡️ With large amounts of capacity and parking space availability, arenas and venues are great retrofits use for fleet electrification, also because all demand falls reliable under that peak arena charge capacity ➡️ Give preferential treatment to first customers 💰 With a blended capital stack, revenue is an increasingly important metric; prioritizing landing deals by cutting deals for first customers will pay off in how they can be used to land future customers ➡️ Bullish on hydrogen for trucks 🚛 Battery vehicles are not sure win for trucks — hydrogen looks more attractive; the weight of batteries is an issue so light-weight hydrogen could be a better option if concerns with safety can be alleviated #climatetechinvesting #climatevc #investing #climatecrisis #impactinvesting #cleantech #founder #startups #advice #podcast (Disclaimer: This is not investment advice.
