The future of learning looks bright, especially when viewed from the ‘versatile verandahs’ of St Patrick's College, Strathfield’s Scientia Building that has been honoured with the William E Kemp Award for Educational Architecture at the Australian Institute of Architects NSW Chapter Awards held on Friday 28 June 2024. “As well as providing a new front door to the historic campus, the Scientia Building celebrates student-centred learning environments, the importance of community and the site’s natural and physical features,” said co-CEO and Principal Ali Bounds on accepting the award. Scientia takes an outside-in approach to reimagining education opportunities where open air spaces blur the line between formal and informal learning and teaching. BVN has been commended for advancing a ‘design ethos that prioritises flexibility and adaptability, catering to diverse educational needs and future uses’. “Emphasising the importance of outdoor education, the Scientia Building features numerous outdoor learning areas, further enriching the educational experience. A unified facade treatment with folded sunshading elements enhances the building's aesthetics and maximises transparency. The design optimises access to daylight, fresh air, and views, enhancing the classroom atmosphere and overall learning experience.” – The AIA NSW Awards Jury citation. Thanks to the Institute, jury, and our project team, client, and collaborators. The Educational Architecture category is proudly supported by Bondor. UCD Architecture is hosting a 5 Credit CPD module for architectural educators and practitioners, on architecture for climate change with a focus on housing, reuse and current research. This module is comprised of 9 weekly lectures that will look at the state-of-the-art in research and practice related to housing, and outline paths into research in schools of Architecture. It will particularly focus on the reuse of buildings for housing, their conservation and maintenance. Best practice case study analysis will form a core focus of the module. Housing will be evaluated in the contexts of whole life carbon, including operational and embodied carbon, best practice conservation and retrofit amongst other topics. Those taking this module will enhance their carbon literacy through a series of lectures that distill the growing body of knowledge related to the whole life carbon minimization of buildings, and best practice in reuse and conservation of buildings. Course work and assignments will focus on the development of knowledge in the field through research, practice and teaching. Through a series of lectures, and associated research and enquiry, students develop their own perspectives on the range of problems and proposed solutions related to the reuse of buildings. The module aims to provide participants with a clear understanding of the environmental benefits of building reuse and knowledge on how they might develop sustainable, low impacting and long lasting solutions. This course is part of the HEA HCI funded project Building Change: Designing a Resilient Future through Architecture Education. In our telegram, we encourage people to ask questions about architecture and the design of educational spaces. We share the answers with you here: 1. What is more important in design – a form or a filling? We use another word – content! It plays a key role in determining which elements will be predominant. Before starting to design, it is necessary to consider how a specific space will be used, provide for multifunctional use, and align it with the educational workload and occupancy of areas. This is always distinct and varies from school to school! 2. How to design if there is no clear vision? Or in the case when the facility is a standard corridor option with minimal recreations, but the team is enthusiastic and has a good idea to embody? In cases where there is no clear understanding of the educational process methodology or there is a very standard educational space, design can begin by considering the content, in other words, what should happen in this particular learning space? If you aim to redesign such a space, it is important to precisely define which specific activities and teaching methods you would like to see. Then, this content can be translated into specific elements of furniture and equipment. As a result, the space will become more functional and adapted to the requirements of the educational process.

NEWS: The University of California, Berkeley broke ground in November of 2023 on the $136.8 million Undergraduate Academic Building. Designed by LMN Architects and TEF Design, the 78,000-sf project will offer more than 45,000 asf of modern learning space including 27 general assignment classrooms, informal study areas, and advising offices for College of Letters and Science. The technology-enabled facility will include flexible instructional venues of varying sizes to support a range of pedagogical styles. Integrating a five-story wing and a three-story wing, the L-shaped structure will be the first mass-timber development on campus. External circulation corridors on all levels will overlook a rooftop terrace sited atop a 400-seat auditorium. Constructed partially below grade, this dynamic educational forum will incorporate ‘turn to team’ seating to enhance interaction and collaboration. A landscaped entrance plaza will accommodate the high volume of students during class change times, with an ADA-accessible pathway providing universal access to the roof terrace. Targeting a minimum of #LEED Gold sustainable design certification, the all-electric building will feature a sophisticated envelope integrating glass, metal, and precast concrete panels. Large windows will supply ample natural light and ventilation to interior spaces. Plant Construction Company, LP is acting as general contractor with occupancy anticipated in 2026. ________________ Tradeline 2024 Spring Conference Schedule: Research Facilities 2024 (April 8-9 in Boston) University Science & Engineering Facilities 2024 SPRING (April 11-12 in Boston) University Facilities 2024 (May 6-7 in San Diego) MORE INFO HERE: https://lnkd.in/gJGGvp_f _________________ https://lnkd.in/gfkJJRTv #highereducation #STEM #laboratory #buildings #construction #projectmanagement #architecture

Architects need to unite and call for change! ✊ Thanks to COA, the architecture profession has become a joke. 😞 This article should be shared as much as possible for architects' voices to reach the COA's ears. 🗣️ The trickle-down impact of the problems noted in the articles is visible; there are few takers of architecture degrees, and more seats are vacant even at the country's best architecture colleges. 🎓 In my opinion, 🤔 The architecture course is like teaching you to make all varieties of cakes without teaching you the basics of running a bakery. 🍰🏭 Today, every TOM/Dick/Harry is an architect and interior designer due to government rules and COA. 😒 The quality of teaching staff is another concerning issue. Many architects, unable to practice as professionals, opt for the more secure teaching path. Unfortunately, many individuals lack practical experience and aren't well-versed in on-site work. Consequently, this leads to a new batch of inadequately trained graduates. A horrible joke is that architects make 15-18k monthly after 5 years of graduation. 😡 Why would anyone take this course? The need of the hour is to cancel the license of all money-minting colleges that are only concerned with fees. 💸 Reduce the number of colleges. Do we really need so many architects? Revise curriculum and include the latest technology and at least teach fundamentals of - sales, marketing, and business development. 💼📚 If not, the future is certainly chaotic. 🌪️ #architectsproblem #coa #architects #architecture #interiordesign https://lnkd.in/gD82qEbg

Create a better acoustic environment in classrooms for the 2023-24 school year. Excessive background in school classrooms and communal areas can have a huge negative impact on teaching and the engagement levels of students. It can also make the school day incredibly tiring for teachers and support staff as they need to work harder to make themselves heard in noisy spaces. The solution to this issue, which is caused by sound reverberation, may be easier than you think. Installing wall or ceiling mounted Hush Absorber panels can transform the acoustic comfort of school buildings without causing disruption as they can be fitted within a matter of hours. Read how St Bronagh’s School in Northern Ireland benefited from the installation of these panels: https://lnkd.in/eRpgrfDC #acousticsolutions #acousticdesign #acousticpanels #acousticconsultant #acoustictreatment #soundproofing #soundproof #architects #architecture #renovationproject #buildingregulations #buildingregs #refurbishment #renovation #buildingconstruction #soundinsulation #acousticsolution #acousticinsulation #buildingrestoration #schools #schooldesign

The “Choice Architecture”: Why Can School Design Be Helpful or Hostile? In the article for EdDesign Mag, Konstantin Seregin, Head of the School Management Laboratory at the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE), reflects on hostile architecture and the architecture of choice and writes about how the environment and its design at school can help or hinder children's learning and development. Can corridors and stairs encourage children to be physically active? Can canteen organisation influence children’s eating habits? What's wrong with limiters on school stair railings and door locks? The notion of hostile architecture provides answers to these questions. https://lnkd.in/eAZx744U
