This year, California has announced a milestone in the amount of battery storage capacity that has been added to the electrical grid. From 2019 to now, California has added 770 megawatts (MW) of battery storage. Further bumping California’s battery storage capacity to a total of 10,379 MW. California officials continue to work towards expanding the state’s capacity of battery energy storage by examining the potential to add an additional 6,813 MW of battery energy storage capacity to the California Independent System Operator region by the end of 2024. Some highlights from Wood Mackenzie's recently released Distributed Energy Resource (DER) report. • Curtailment-based resources such as flexible EV charging and building automation systems will account for half of total US Distributed Energy Resource (DER) capacity in 2028. • Generation-based resources including distributed solar and energy storage will account for the other half, according to Wood Mackenzie. • If Wood Mackenzie’s forecast pans out, additional US DER capacity in 2028 would comfortably exceed the 160 GW high-end target of the US Department of Energy’s Virtual Power Plant (VPP) Liftoff Report.  • A tripling of the current 30 GW to 60 GW of US virtual power plant (VPP) capacity could offset 10% to 20% of total peak load demand by 2030, according to DOE. • If the projected 217 GW in DER capacity were to enroll in VPP programs, “this resource is at the scale to meaningfully offset peak load growth without relying on new transmission or RTO interconnection.” #distributedenergy #energytransition #renewableenergy #renewables #solar #wind #gridresilience #microgrid #rooftopsolar #energystorage #peakload #virtualpowerplant #vpp #evcharging #buildingautomation #inflationreductionact

Canary Media starting the week off with a bang - surprising no one, the US energy storage market is off to a roaring start in 2024. "The US battery market is on track for its best year yet Overall storage installations — meaning utility-scale, home, and commercial projects — grew 84 percent in Q1. Grid battery installations grew even faster. In the first quarter of 2024, nearly 1.3 gigawatts (GW) of battery storage was installed at power plants, homes, and commercial facilities across the nation, according to new data from the American Clean Power Association and Wood Mackenzie. Great to see our subscribers in NYC last week to talk about #demandgrowth in PJM. A special thanks to the Evercore team, esp. Guilherme Musa & Joseph Salvatore, CFA for hosting us.   A lot of great discussion about whether the hype around data center load growth is real, and more takeaways than I can capture here. Just a few: 📈 PJM has consistently and notoriously overpredicted demand in the past, leading to some skepticism on their incredible 2.2% CAGR forecast published in 2024. However, since 2022, PJM has continually adjusted their forecast upward. 🌎 Northern Virginia remains the global data center hotspot. The counties & Dominion are investing significantly to enable further interconnections in the next few years, but as power prices creep upward, we could see growth move elsewhere. 🔋 Participants remain cautious about the logistical (permitting, safety, construction, business, etc.) challenges of data center supplying their power behind the meter - but we had a discussion about everything from BTM solar + storage, to gas, to SMRs.   Great discussion - looking forward to a condensed version of the conversation in our upcoming public webinar.
