When will WV begin to let new combined cycle natural gas fired electricity generators compete against the old guard AEP? Having one choice for electricity in Southern WV is an atrocity to its citizens. Solar and wind is not a viable option. Utilities are building gas. Simple cycle turbines can ramp quickly and act as peaking plants in renewable-heavy systems. But utilities are building combined-cycle plants like this as well. Entergy Texas said this week that it plans to build two new natural gas power plants to meet rapidly increasing electricity demand in southern Texas. Reuters has the story.   A plant in Port Arthur, if approved, will produce 754 MW and will be equipped with technology to capture carbon emissions and a combustion turbine able to run on hydrogen. Gas watts coming to Southeast Texas Southeast Texas is experiencing extraordinary economic and population growth, leading to a significant rise in electricity demand and the urgent need for Entergy Texas to add 40% more generation capacity to its #powergrid in four years. To help address this challenge, Entergy Texas filed an application with the Public Utility Commission of Texas to seek approval of two #naturalgas power plants to be named Legend and Lone Star. Both will be #carboncapture-enabled and feature a #hydrogen-capable combustion turbine. In addition to increased service reliability for all customers the new generation will support large-scale economic activity in the region like Sempra Infrastructure’s Port Arthur #LNG project.
