Pioneer Service has been an active member of the Valley Industrial Association of Illinois for many years. From advocacy and legislative representation to networking opportunities and training and development programs, our leadership team (and staff across many departments) have found ongoing benefits to the collaboration and partnership we have found with other members in the organization and the staff of the association. Under Kathy Gilmore’s leadership, an amazing board of directors, and an exceptional team of staff members, this is an important organization for any manufacturer to consider. The Valley Industrial Association (#VIA) turns 122 years this year. Amazingly, It was founded in 1902 – when Teddy Roosevelt was President of the US, the radio was first demonstrated publicly, the first movie theatre opened in LA, the first JC Penny store opened in Wyoming, Target Corp is founded, air conditioning was invented in NYC, Richard Daley was born (Chicago mayor 1965-1971) and Ray Kroc was born (ie McDonalds) – to name a few other notable 1902 facts. Its longevity is a testament to the value it provides to its member companies. The original founding members included sixteen manufacturers in the Aurora area. Members today can be found across Northern IL, including Kane, DuPage, Cook, Lake, McHenry, Kendall, and DeKalb counties. Included in the over 200-member list are industrial companies, manufacturing companies, service providers, and suppliers to the industrial ecosystem across this part of IL. So, a shout out to Kathy and her team: Dawn Curran, CFRE (VP Workforce Development), Susan Secondi (Director Operations and Finance) Laura Swarts (Membership Director) and Molly Schiltz (Marketing Coordinator). Thanks for the work you are doing to support manufacturers across the region! #networking #manufacturingIL #Foxvalleybusiness #industrialcompaniesIL #partnership #success2024 #bestpractices #leadership #traininganddevelopment #growthstrategies

Early in my career at Anheuser-Busch, employees were gifted a book called Great by Choice. The author, Jim Collins, studied why some companies thrive in uncertainty and chaos, and others do not. My favorite quote from the book is this one: "Indeed, if there’s one overarching message arising from more than six thousand years of corporate history across all our research—studies that employ comparisons of great versus good in similar circumstances—it would be this: greatness is not primarily a matter of circumstance; greatness is first and foremost a matter of conscious choice and discipline." In other words, companies do not succeed or fail due to chance. They succeed or fail due to the deliberate choices of individuals that work at the firm. Over the last few months, executives at Anheuser-Busch made many conscious choices on how to run their business. Which influencers should they use? How should they respond to customer complaints? How should they market their brands moving forward? Unfortunately, many of these choices were not great. Sales continue to suffer, and as a result, hundreds of great Anheuser-Busch employees were let go yesterday. Hopefully these employees quickly find new opportunities as they were caught up in circumstances beyond their control. Hopefully Anheuser-Busch executives make better choices moving forward. Greatness depends on it.

Improving the ROI founders get from their business lawyers.💡 Creator of The Legal Blueprint® Method💡 Outside General Counsel💡 Board Member💡4x Founder💡 Acclaimed Corporate Litigator & Int'l IP Attorney💡 Let's go! 🚀
When I started my predecessor firm 9 years ago, I had already been practicing law for 10 years and knew outside general counsel services would be the focus. I read every Ten Things publication I could get my hands on by Sterling Miller, and every interview like the one posted below. Fact is, the term “fractional GC” and “outside general counsel” had not taken off back then. I was hard pressed to find people who offered this service. Sometimes, you have to be a leader in bringing forth the vision you see. I’m delighted that there are now more and more firms offering true general counsel services. Being an effective GC takes unique skills and serving in this role brings unique benefits to clients. It’s why moving from a business attorney to an outside general counsel can be such an important, impactful, and subtle shift for founders. Check out the article for an idea of how someone serving in this role shows up as far more than a paper pusher. #generalcounsel #ceo #lawyer
When you think about the role of the General Counsel, what comes to mind as the essential leadership skill? Would building a diverse, dynamic team rise to the top? In this recent Vanguard read, Thomas Sabatino explains why leadership skills are even more critical to a GC than legal know-how. Mr. Sabitino is the Chair of the Vanguard Forum for GCs and former GC of Aetna, Hertz, Walgreens and others. "The GC role writ large has evolved pretty significantly over the last twenty years... It's accelerated in the last ten, where the GC is beyond just the legal adviser, but also very much engaged in a whole range of issues outside of law." This is what democratizing corporate power looks like … The people are injecting morality into the equation of corporate market strategy.” ~Shahid King Bolsen Agree or disagree, there’s no doubt to the level of power a population can have over any businesses, including those that may be viewed as “too big to fail.” This has recently been proven with the loss of Anheuser-Busch stocks after their controversial Bud Light advertisement. How well do we know our clients/customers? Personally I don’t care for political ideologies to be incorporated with businesses. Yet, I’m reminded of a conversation with a manager (not sure how they hold that title) and I quote; “people are people.” Indeed they are. So, I ask again; how well do you know your people?” #business #starbucks #budlight #controversy #empathy #customerexperience #peoplefirst

Association Management Membership and Operations @ Smithbucklin | Board Relations and Test Development Coordinator for the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board
Yesterday, the entire company took part in conversation around Smithbucklin's new values, what they mean, how they are applied, and what they can unlock for us with intentional practice. As someone who is values-driven and prioritizes company culture in any job, I was impressed. Every single value struck a chord with me and related beautifully with each other; together they weave a web of the skills and attitudes that yield success. Two things became clear throughout the day: 1. Smithbucklin did the leg work to distill these values from employee input. I can hear the voices of so many of my colleagues in each definition. (Shoutout to everyone that was involved in that year-long process.) 2. I found my fit in association management. If this is what I love to do, Smithbucklin is where I love to do it! Definitions included here: https://lnkd.in/g5eb2-PS

Last week, the Artemis Ward team had the chance to meet with leadership at Baltimore's Lexington Market, one of the oldest public markets in America (opened in 1782), followed by an inspiring conversation about the market's role as a community hub and civic asset in the heart of the city. A few big takeaways: 1). Civic spaces like Lexington Market operate best when observation, listening, and dialogue are constant and ongoing between leadership, vendors, and visitors. 2). While the vendors are there to turn a profit, the market is there to serve the community and preserve the public's trust. 3). Lexington Market knows who its community is and every decision the market's leadership makes is guided by an understanding of how the market can be a welcoming place that enhances their day-to-day lives. There are lessons here for every kind of org, company, or brand: Discovery is an act of listening, observing, and exchanging. Core values should define all decision-making. And the answer you're looking for always lies in your audience. Thanks to Jamal McCord, Jessica Blackwell Parks, and Abigail Lammel for having us in and for showing us what makes Lexington Market such an invaluable part of the Baltimore community. (And for taking a snapshot with me.)
