“BYD Co., China’s top-selling car brand, reported a record quarterly profit Monday, rounding out its best period ever for electric vehicle sales despite a sectorwide slowdown. Net income grew 82% from the same time last year to 10.4 billion yuan ($1.4 billion) in the three months through September, in line with the company’s preliminary guidance earlier in October. Revenue rose 38% to 162 billion yuan.” “Net income for the first nine months of the year jumped to 21.4 billion yuan, already higher than its full-year figure of 16.6 billion yuan in 2022. Shenzhen-based BYD’s best-selling car models include the Song sport utility vehicle and Dolphin hatchback. BYD sold almost as many fully electric vehicles as Tesla in the third quarter, falling just 3,456 short. Including hybrids, BYD sold a total 822,094 vehicles in the three-month period. BYD’s strength comes despite sales growth of new-energy cars in China broadly slowing.” “Shipments are expected to rise less than 1% month-on-month in October, according to the Passenger Car Association. Analysts’ improving profit outlook for BYD has helped make its stock more attractive, driving its forward earnings multiple down to about 18 times, compared with over 50 times for Tesla. BYD’s shares are up 40% in Hong Kong over the past 12 months and 28% year-to-date.”

Being an early adopter of my very own First car ‘Fisker Ocean One’, I would like to share my personal emotion with my FOO, since the delivery in November 2023. First of all, when I say ‘my very own First car’ it is not that I have never driven any car till date. I have driven various brands - Maruti, Toyota Corolla, BMW 535Xi M-Sports, Maserati Ghibli SQ4, Audi Q7. But Fisker Ocean One was my very first investment on an EV from a company that is committed to ‘A Clean Future for All’. When purchasing a vehicle, the basic question that will play a major role is the ‘purpose’ why I should buy this vehicle? And like many other early adopters of the FOO, the purpose – ‘A Clean Future for All’ made me to stick to ‘Fisker Ocean One’, as my very own first car. A Clean Future for All – is not just a statement but it is Fisker Inc.’s commitment for a sustainable green environment for generations to come. Every time, when I sit behind the wheel of my Fisker Ocean One, I personally feel proud, that I have also committed to a sustainable green environment, not only by adopting to an EV vehicle but also an EV from an organization with a vision (A Clean Future for All) and mission (To create the world’s most emotional and sustainable vehicles). There is a saying – Wisdom Comes with Knowledge, and I totally get it, in this materialistic era not every influencer/product reviewer has the maturity to review a product based on the impact towards sustainable environment.

Who will stop the rapidly growing dominance 🚀of China in #EV and automobile manufacturing? Perhaps the simple is “NO ONE” …. As long as legacy manufacturers don’t quickly adapt in responding to the fast changing demands of consumers across the globe, driven by the growing need for affordable, energy efficient & reliable mobility, they’ll soon find themselves in obsolescence.

The $10,000 USD price tag of the BYD Seagull piques my interest, especially considering that even with a 25% tariff, the cost would only escalate to $12,500. My personal stint with a Yugo, which I now retrospectively question, showcased affordability but at the expense of performance, positioning it as a budget-friendly alternative to the more esteemed Rabbit. Back in the 1980s, the Yugo was marketed at about $4,000, which, adjusted for inflation, aligns with the Seagull's current price. Yet, its sales didn't skyrocket due to a variety of factors including reliability, safety, performance, branding, and geopolitical turmoil. Concurrently, Hyundai was beginning to carve its niche, offering vehicles that, although not perfect, edged out the Yugo in quality. I had one of those too. This leads to the question: could a low-end vehicle like the BYD Seagull, assuming it enters the U.S. market, succeed where others faltered? Electrification might bridge the performance and reliability divide, and with BYD's global brand recognition, it stands a chance. Considering EVs excel as commuter vehicles, there seems to be a viable niche for the Seagull. What are your thoughts? #ev #automotive #economycars

Vietnam's VinFast has overtaken BYD to become the third largest car company After the US stock market closed on August 25, the share price of VinFast, a Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer, continued to soar to US$68.77, with a market value of US$159.7 billion. The market value of VinFast has exceeded one trillion yuan, even surpassing Chinese listed car companies such as BYD and Wei Xiaoli. Today it is the third largest automaker in the world after Tesla and Toyota. It is reported that VinFast was established in 2017 and is a division of Vingroup, the largest private group in Vietnam. The company started producing internal combustion vehicles in 2019, becoming Vietnam's first domestic automaker. VinFast is currently fully focused on electric vehicles and is also considered the "Vietnamese Tesla". In mid-August, VinFast completed the merger with the US special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) Black Spade Acquisition and officially landed on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the trading code "VFS". On the day of listing, its stock price jumped from the IPO price of US$10 to around US$37, far surpassing General Motors of the United States. However, in stark contrast to VinFast's stock price, its sales performance has not been so outstanding. VinFast began selling cars in California in March this year, but then began the recall in May. Its first car sold in the United States, the VF8 crossover, registered only 128 new vehicles from January to May. In the global market, after VinFast acquired GM's automobile production line in Vietnam in 2018, it OEMed GM's hatchback economy car Opel, with sales reaching 18,000 in 2020. In 2022, the cumulative global sales of VinFast will be 7,400 vehicles, and in the first half of this year, it will be 11,143 vehicles. Compared with the third largest volume in the world by market capitalization, its sales volume is not worth mentioning at all. It is worth mentioning that after the soaring share price of VinFast, it has not only become Vietnam's largest listed company in the US, but also the largest listing in the US market so far in 2023. Regarding the reason for the sharp rise in stock prices, industry insiders said that new car-making forces will usher in a wave of capital boom at the beginning of the US stock market listing, but in the end the market value may return to rationality. In addition, the rise of VinFast's stock price is due to the fact that there are relatively few stocks in the market, and most of the stocks are locked. This also means that the trend and market value of VinFast's stock price are not stable, and it is vulnerable to market speculation. Fast Technology News on August 28. Reuters: This was newsworthy German dealership Sternauto opens BYD store in Berlin By Victoria Waldersee and Annegret Hilse BERLIN, (Reuters) - Chinese EV giant BYD's (002594.SZ), opens new tab five models on sale in Germany will be showcased at a new BYD-only store in Berlin run by dealership Sternauto, in the latest sign that the carmaker is rapidly encroaching on European competitors' turf. Sternauto, which has exclusive rights to sell BYD cars in eastern Germany, set up the store to get closer to customers as awareness of the brand grows among Germans seeking an affordable electric vehicle. "One of the biggest topics for BYD is that it is not that familiar to German customers," Oliver Hein, head of BYD for Sternauto, told Reuters. But recognition is growing "exponentially" as the brand invests heavily in marketing, he added. While most of BYD's revenues still stem from sales in China, the carmaker has set its sights overseas with new manufacturing capacity under construction in Hungary, Brazil, and Thailand. It sold more EVs than Tesla (TSLA.O), opens new tab in the fourth quarter of last year and is growing at a fierce speed, with 2023 net profit expected some 86.5% above 2022's. Already, it is coming under scrutiny from European officials investigating whether carmakers exporting China-made EVs to Europe have an unfair advantage over domestic players, in a sign of the looming regulatory battle between Europe and China as Europe attempts to shield its market from low-cost competition. While Chinese brands can sell their vehicles in Europe at higher prices than in China and still undercut local pricing, they also face challenges from supply chain bottlenecks to import costs and complex certification requirements. "There's going to be a major shakeout of Chinese brands in the next 5-10 years," Hein said. "If someone runs out of steam, they'll be out of the market relatively fast," he said, adding Sternauto felt BYD had what it takes to succeed. “Chinese automaker BYD Co. Ltd. surged further ahead of its rivals on its home turf last year as sales jumped 50%, with competition looking set to heat up again in 2024 in the world’s largest auto market. BYD led the Chinese mainland market with more than 2.7 million passenger cars sold in 2023 and a 12.5% share, up from 1.8 million vehicles and an 8.8% share in 2022, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). It beat foreign rivals’ joint ventures (JVs) and domestic brands such as FAW-Volkswagen Automobile Co. Ltd. and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co. Ltd., which took second and third place with around 1.8 million and 1.4 million cars sold, respectively, in 2023. FAW- Volkswagen’s share of the Chinese market slipped to 8.5% in 2023 from 8.7% in 2022, while that of Geely’s rose to 6.5% from 6%, CPCA’s data showed.” “The end-of-year push by automakers and stepped up efforts to drive consumer spending by local governments took effect, the CPCA said Wednesday. In December, automakers upped the ante for promotions in both scope and intensity, involving nearly all manufacturers and vehicle models, resulting in a historically rare end-of-year promotional sprint, the association said. As part of measures to restore and expand consumption, the National Administration of Financial Regulation in October urged lenders to dramatically expand lending to consumers, including loans for cars. The top financial regulator specifically called for increasing financing support to encourage consumers to upgrade their automobiles. In March 2022, Shenzhen-based BYD stopped making vehicles that run on fossil fuels to focus on pure electric cars and plug-in hybrids as the company works toward its goal of selling only zero-emission vehicles globally by 2040.” “This also comes as demand for gasoline cars is expected to shrink further in China as domestically made new energy vehicles (NEVs) become more and more affordable. This has also seen international carmakers pivoting to electrification and increasingly tapping their local JV partners for NEV research and development to defend market share. BYD became the world’s best-selling electric-vehicle (EV) maker when it surpassed U.S.-carmaker Tesla Inc. in the fourth quarter, with sales driven mainly by a broader line-up of cheaper models. Tesla delivered more than 484,507 cars in the last three months of 2023, while BYD sold 526,409 EVs in the same period. Tesla cut the starting prices of its China-made Model 3 sedan by 5.9% to 245,900 yuan ($34,300) and its Model Y sport utility vehicle by 2.8% to 258,900 yuan, potentially sparking concerns of another round of discounts that marked a brutal price war among automakers in China around a year ago.”
