Remember when AI was just a buzzword and chatbots were as smart as a toaster? Well, times have changed. Now we've got AI everywhere, even in drones. It's like we're living in a sci-fi movie.
Check out this video I found a while back, https://lnkd.in/ddyEbKrq. It's a short Sci-fi film about these mini drones that can recognize faces and follow targets. You may say it's targeting only the bad guys, but what if, thanks to AI's non-deterministic nature, it will 'think' that its target is one of the kids playing in the area of its 'mission'. Or maybe it may specifically target you because your 'data halo' just happens to overlap with the intended target or because you liked a non-politically-correct post on social media...
So here's the thing. With all this cool tech, we've got to remember to keep things safe. It's easy to get carried away with the shiny new toys and forget about the risks.
Recently, I stumbled upon an eye-opening short film titled "Slaughterbots"...
❗ 🤖 ❗
It was produced by ALTER - quite some time ago, but its message is timeless and more relevant than ever. It delves into the burgeoning realm of AI and the advent of autonomous weapons, such as killer drones. This discovery led me to some serious reflection, and I felt compelled to share my thoughts with you.
In this transformative era of AI development, it's our responsibility to steer our society towards a utopian vision. However, this isn't a straightforward path. If we allow regulations to slip or become lax, the consequences could be dire and unpredictable. Killer drones, which are already a significant threat, are a prime example of why we need to remain vigilant.
The question isn't just about technological capability. It's profoundly about moral and ethical guidance. No AI system should operate outside the bounds of strict control, and more importantly, moral decisions must never be left to algorithms. This is a line we cannot afford to blur.
I invite you to watch this video, reflect on it, and spread the word about it. Let these thoughts sink in.
Despite the challenges, I remain optimistic, envisioning a future where AI enhances our lives without compromising our moral compass. Together, we can work towards a future that's not just technologically advanced, but also ethically sound - a real utopia 🌍

What The Eras Tour Concert Trailer can teach us about defense-sponsored #researchanddevelopment:
Like many #Swifties, I was beyond elated when The Eras Tour Concert movie was announced last week. (The concert really was as spectacular, energizing, and glamorous as the trailer conveys!)
Within the first 2 seconds, I thought, “Oh look, drone footage!” Throughout the trailer, I couldn’t help but appreciate how Director Sam Wrench and his team used camera-mounted drones to capture such incredible footage.
And that’s where defense research - exactly what I oversee as a #programmanager - comes in.
The #defense department sponsors research projects and programs whose findings are available to the global public. At this stage of research, principal investigators (PIs) and their teams, along with their government sponsor(s), envision how their research and emerging technology can be applied to public and commercial use:
How can the public use their research findings to develop solutions for the public’s technological needs?
In the case of this trailer, I can see how cameras on drones recorded 3-days’ worth of concert footage: This requires rapid and secure wireless communications, coordination between the drone + camera, coordination among the multiple drones and cameras themselves, user-friendly systems between the human operator(s) and the computers/tech they use to operate these drones and cameras, and secure systems to prevent hackers (or what we refer to as “adversaries”) from taking control of the drones and cameras themselves. (We can’t have these drones and cameras go rogue and adversaries stealing this footage!)
Much of that tech originates from basic research that is funded by the defense department.
So every time I watch this trailer, I can’t help but think of all the other PIs, university researchers, their graduate students, government sponsors, government tech leads, and program managers like me(!) that have developed all the technologies to make this trailer, the concert film, and so many other related-technologies, possible.

🎦 Watch this video for an overview on IONA - https://lnkd.in/eVu_5ara
IONA is a network of sensors designed to monitor and control industrial robots.
The system can monitor the robot but also the relationship between with the robot and the fixture or work object that it is performing a task on.

How long are we going to put up with film studios covering up what we do and not allowing us to show what we did?
You know, I know, we all know, this train fight is as "practical" as the light-cycle scene in Tron Legacy. It's not sustainable. As long as we put up with this, we are eating our own tail.
World VFX Day is coming up. Let's talk about it.
