They all hosted beach tennis tournaments in 2023, the sport gaining popularity from the coast to the countryside. Introduced to #Brazil in 2008 in #RiodeJaneiro and gaining traction with the hosting of the country’s first national tournament in Florianópolis in 2010, #BeachTennis has steadily become a cultural phenomenon. The CBT (CBT- Confederação Brasileira de Tênis) highlights Brazil’s notable achievements in the sport, including third place in the 2008 World Championships and subsequent victories in various international competitions. But what is it that has made beach tennis so popular? There are several factors involved. Firstly, the notable increase in beach tennis courts across the country has significantly contributed to the sport’s widespread adoption. Many junior tennis players have difficulty to move forward and backward during a baseline rally. It mainly has to do with watching the speed of the upcoming ball. With higher speed you have to move backward and with lower speed you have to move forward. I always tell my players to compare it with the situation when you want to cross the street. When the approaching car has high speed, you better wait with crossing the street. When the same car has low speed, you have time enough to cross the street. So, in order to cross the street you have to watch the speed of the car. With tennis the same. It’s important to see the speed of the upcoming ball. That’s not easy, but when you focus on this, you position forward/backward will be better and the chance becomes bigger that you win the point. Cost reduction and sustainability are now two important intertwined elements. The Wilson balls I bought are a great example of this. Tennis "ball box caps" only prevent the balls from falling after they are first opened. Wilson achieved significant cost reduction and sustainability by keeping the diameter of the plastic cap's hole slightly lower than the diameter of the tennis balls.
