Since the passage of MHSA in California our tribal elders have advocated for cultural competency in provision of mental healthcare. We have been working to provide cultural competency training to address the impact of genocide, social and geographical isolation as these historical and ongoing mental health challenges are essentially ignored in the field of mental health care for our tribal children and families. California, although it has language that may promote cultural competency and outreach and engagement of underserved communities there are little to no efforts by government officials to provide the resources to support intent of public policies. There is absolutely no effort to address the needs of our tribal youth and families. It’s part of the ongoing efforts to “colonize “ tribal communities by continuing to ignore the total lack of cultural competency in provision of mental health care and services that reflect great displacement and disparities between what’s needed and what is ultimately provided. Colonization at its best!
