Do not worry too much if your pension is never going to be big enough! A cup of coffee and a chat with an elderly person can be quite enlightening. I just met Millie. The coffee was average, but the conversation was sparkling! Born just before the war, Millie is well into her eighties but still going strong. Her creative mind has led to her having a little business which earns a few extra pounds. This said, it is the enjoyment and satisfaction of what she does and the pleasure it brings to others, that brings the light to her eyes and the life and laughter in her voice. She is a joy to be with. Millie creates the most beautiful cards often of family pictures and sometimes the family pets. They are truly quite something to see as she happily presented them to me. Not rolling in great financial luxury, Mille is content and enjoying herself and benefiting others. Perhaps her story will help many, who just know they will never make enough money to retire on their yacht in Monte Carlo or cruise the world. In older age, when we get there, we need enough money to maintain a good level of freedom of choice. One of those choices is deciding what to do with our time. Think ahead and plan to do what you can enjoy, while it earns some pocket money, or more! Not exactly young myself, I would never choose to stop interacting with people through the work I so much enjoy. They can be positive or negative. They can affect you now, or in the future. If you made a bad choice/decision, you may or may not be able to correct your choice/decision. You can make wise choices/decisions by asking questions. There are no right or wrong questions! If you do not know...ASK the question! Dating before getting married...you ask questions. Q: What would you like to eat? A: I don't know. Q: Are you hungry? A: I'm not sure. So I make a decision and she gets mad b/c I chose somewhere she didn't want to go. This was a comment made in a client meeting this week when we were talking about their retirement goals and travel plans. This couple had recently retired and we were having a conversation about the inputs required for our cashflow modelling session. The starting point for financial and cashflow planning is to document: 📒 A personal statement of position - what you currently own and what you owe. 📒 A personal profit and loss - a listing of your income and expenses (clients typically review their past three months' bank statements for this). From then, we need to project forward how your investment assets will grow over time, how you will add to your wealth in the lead-up to retirement and the draw-down from your wealth over time once you stop work. The key is that you don't want to outlive your wealth. Also known as living beyond your means. Around 40% of Kiwi's in retirement survive on NZ Super alone, which is a scary thought (current NZ Super rates for a couple, taxed at M, are $799.18 per fortnight each). Conversely, as this couple identified, they don't want to scrimp and save their way through retirement and then pass on buckets of money to their kids for them to fritter away. So, the good news is that my clients can afford to do their planned long distance trips travelling business class. Don't feel too sorry for their kids though, there's still enough for inheritances for them, but if they want to upgrade their flights, that's on them! #besmartwithmoney #retirementplanning #financialadviser

Over the past 15 years, I have experienced (through my clients): Successfully retiring 42 times. Spouse passing away 7 times. Successfully exiting a business 9 times. All of these things have taught me a tremendous amount about what factors impact financial success the most. These are the 4 factors that impact financial success the most: 1. Location of Wealth Where you put your money matters. It matters for: - Flexibility - Taxation - Access - Risk 2. Protect Your Income Fully Your income is what allows you to financially live your life. If you lost 20% of your income, how does that affect you? Yes, it's not a fun conversation. Yes, no one wants to pay for it. AND... I've never met anyone who had to use it say..."I wish I didn't protect myself" 3. Tax Think with the end in mind. When you decide where to put your money...what's the taxation on that money when you pull it out? We've all heard the saying "Don't put all your eggs in one basket." So abide by it! 4. Have True Liquidity Liquidity for your finances is access to money within a couple days without high taxes and penalties.. True liquidity is the same with one addition: It's not correlated with the market. Imagine you are about to retire. Say the year 2022.. That same year the market is down 20%....and most of your money is IN the market. How does that affect your retirement? Do you retire? Now imagine having a bucket of money that is not correlated with the market. You can now use that money to live on when the market is down... Then use the money that is in the market when the market is up.
