Somebody's poisoned the waterhole…
AI art is sweeping across the internet, causing a bit of a ruckus. But fear not, fellow artists, for there are heroes among us.
Enter stage left, Ben Zhao, a professor at the University of Chicago. He and his dynamic team have conjured up two innovative tools - Nightshade and Glaze. Their mission? To combat the use of art in training for AI art creators.
Now, you may be wondering, "Why is this a big deal?" Great question!
Imagine this: your beautiful, one-of-a-kind artwork has been scraped - essentially mass downloaded - off the internet, along with countless others. This vast collection of stolen art was then used to train hefty AI art generators. Feels a bit like someone's stolen your paintbrush and started forging your work, doesn't it?
Artists are fighting back, striving to regain control over their unique styles. And Glaze and Nightshade are two ways they're doing just that.
Glaze works like an invisibility cloak for your art. It subtly alters your work so computers perceive it differently, while to us humans, it appears unchanged. The result? Your distinctive style becomes unrecognizable to AI, thwarting any attempts to replicate it.
Nightshade goes a step further, acting as an antidote to the AI art pilfering. It subtly tweaks parts of the images, throwing a spanner in the works for the AI model. The result can be delightfully chaotic – think cats masquerading as dogs or AI-generated images that Salvador Dali might have dreamt up.
So, what do you make of this, my fellow creatives? Would you wield these tools to guard your art from AI imposters? And how do you think this might shape the AI models of the future?
I'd love to hear your thoughts below. Stay creative, my friends!
