The good old-fashioned way, you sat at a desk with paper and pencil and sketched out ideas. If you had something you wanted to explore, you then mocked it up, to size, in magic marker taking great pains to render type and images as they would appear if actually printed. Back in those days, you had to really know how to draw. Once an idea was accepted, now the real work began. First, you got text from a copywriter which you marked up with instruction for typesetting, indicating what fonts you wanted, size and spacing. This was all based on the layout that you had done earlier, so everything had to be the actual size as it would appear in final printed form. A typical markup would be like: Headline: 60/56pt Bodoni Bold, Initial Caps by 36 picas Body: 12/15pt Franklin Gothic Roman, flush left by 15 picas, 3p indent on first line of all paragraphs after the initial paragraph, +8pts space between paragraphs Depending on what you were marking up, specs had to be very specific. My first job was as an assistant GD in a book design studio (textbooks, not paperback novels) and my specs were pages long. This generally took a couple days depending on how much text you had. Do overs were costly, so you had to be very specific and very right! What you got back were galleys, pages of text in a single column. Headlines were generally phototyped and came in a long strip. Sometimes headlines were done using a product called Letraset. These were plastic sleeves of transfer letters in a specific typeface at a specific size that you physically rubbed with a stylus or pen to transfer the letters onto another piece of paper. This was then photographed using a device called a Stat Machine that took high contrast images which could be scaled to whatever size you wanted. In the meantime, you got imagery either by contracting with a photographer to shoot the product or person or location, or you hired an illustrator to create an image for you. Sometimes you drew the image yourself. These were then taken to the stat machine, scaled per your layout and reshot so that you had an FPO image (for position only). Now comes the fun part. Taking all these pieces, you then took a large piece of specialized cardboard with a super white coating (illustration board) that you marked up in non-photo blue pencil, making a grid per your layout for positioning all the type and images. This was called the “mechanical”. You coated the back of the type galleys with either rubber cement (a royal pain in the ass), or ran it though a waxer that coated the page with a very thin layer of wax. Likewise, the FPOs of the imagery. Then you painstakingly cut up the galleys and positioned them on the illustration board with the image FPOs to recreate the layout you drew a couple of weeks ago. Kerning was done by physically cutting out letters and sliding the closer to each other.

Images Needed: A high-resolution image of a girl lying down. High-resolution images of books (can be a single image of a pile of books or multiple images). A night sky background (can include stars, moon, etc.). Optional: Additional elements like a blanket, pillow, or other night-time objects. Step 2: Create the Background Open Photoshop and create a new document with your desired dimensions. Place the night sky background onto your canvas: File > Place Embedded > Select your night sky image. Resize and position it to cover the entire canvas. Add any additional night-time elements (like stars or moon) if they are separate images. Step 3: Add the Books Place the book images onto your canvas: File > Place Embedded > Select your book images. Resize and arrange them to form a surface where the girl can lie down. You can use multiple layers to create a realistic pile of books. Blend the books together: Use layer masks to seamlessly blend the edges of the books. Adjust the shadows and highlights to match the lighting of the night sky. Step 4: Add the Girl Place the image of the girl onto your canvas: File > Place Embedded > Select the girl image. Resize and position her so she appears to be lying on the books. Extract the girl from her background: Use the Pen Tool or Quick Selection Tool to select the girl. Create a layer mask to remove the background. Adjust the shadows and lighting: Use the Brush Tool on a new layer set to Multiply to paint shadows where the girl touches the books. Use the Dodge Tool to add highlights to areas where the moonlight or stars might hit her. Step 5: Finishing Touches Color Adjustments: Use Adjustment Layers (such as Curves, Levels, and Hue/Saturation) to ensure the girl, books, and background all have a consistent color tone. Add a Glow Effect: Create a new layer and set it to Soft Light or Overlay. Use a soft brush with a low opacity to paint light glows around the girl and books to simulate moonlight. Add any additional elements like a pillow or blanket to make the scene more cozy and realistic. Final Adjustments: Apply a slight vignette to focus the viewer's attention on the center of the image. Add any final touches like noise reduction, sharpening, or additional color grading. Step 6: Save Your Work Save the project as a PSD file to keep all your layers intact for future edits. Today, let’s talk about the fascinating world of typesetting, also known as 'interior book design'. Typesetting harks back to the era of the letterpress, where (very patient) craftsmen manually selected and arranged individual letters (types) before printing. Simply put, typesetting is how the text is formatted on the page. But, it's so much more than that. A typesetter manages: * word and letter spacing * font type and size * margins and the trim size of the page * overall layout of the text on the page, in the chapter and in the book as a whole. It's a job that requires skill, practice and precision ... and is not something most people can do themselves. Not well, or without a considerable dose of stress. Essentially, there are three levels of 'typesetting' - although the crossover in these 'job descriptions' is considerable. 1. Typesetter: perhaps an 'old school' term, a typesetter is responsible for arranging the text on a page so it's easy to read and looks good. 2. Layout Artist: a step above a typesetter, a layout artist considers visual presentation beyond the text; this includes the placement of images, text boxes, and the overall layout of each page. 3. Graphic Designer: this is the full package; graphic designers go well beyond the text and layout and are all about creativity and voice, and ensure visual continuity throughout the book. When you're self-publishing, don't skimp on the interior layout. Years hiring designers: 13 # portfolios reviewed: 🤯 (IDK it’s in the thousands) Case studies read in their entirety: Gonna go with 0 here... It’s not that I don’t care about your work. I definitely do! It’s that hiring managers are crunched for time and have a lot of portfolios to look at. There simply isn’t time to read every word of your case study. Good portfolios: 1. Cut to the chase 2. Optimize for scannability 3. Communicate a lot of info w/ visuals A few ways to do that: 1. Show a big, hi fi visual of the final product right at the top so I know what the product is and have context. 2. Optimize your headers, images, and image captions. The reader should be able to understand the project by quickly scanning. And they’re more likely to pause and look at those three design elements. Remember your typography, white space, and hierarchy fundamentals—this aids scannability. 3. Avoid giant walls of text. I see a lot of case studies that start with paragraphs upon paragraphs of text. As designers, we know it’s common for users to skip over long passages of text and miss important information. Your case study is no different. Portfolios are hard and there’s no shortage of opinions on them. I’m sharing my own perspective as a hiring manager in hopes that it helps someone.
