Before you rush to enter the 2024 Cannes Lions competition, you should know what you’re getting into. I counted last year's #CannesLions entries so you don’t have to! See the breakdown below. Last year, they received 26,994 entries. My back-of-the-envelope math suggests that was north of $40M on entry fees, alone.  The juries make decisions, but the organizers have recommended percentages for shortlists and hardware. On average, 10% of entries and are shortlisted in each category and 3.25% of entries win an award. Other interesting stats: % of entries that won grand prix: 0.13% % of entries that won gold: 0.50% % of entries that won silver: 1.02% % of entries that won bronze: 1.59% % of shortlist that won awards: 32.20% It’s a glorious boondoggle and the industry’s need to pat itself on the back is over-the-top grotesque. BUT, the best creative work IS inspiring. (It would still be inspiring without the millions spent on self-congratulations, but nobody is going to stop this party.) If you ARE going to play the game, you might as well understand what type of entries (and what type of case studies) earn the gold. What I've learnt from judging awards Recently, I chaired judging the Asia Pacific Stevie Awards in a couple of categories, and here's my takeaways: ⭐ Proof is key: Surprisingly, many entrants didn't provide attachments to back up their claims. Adding evidence strengthens your case and boosts credibility. ⭐ Show me the money: Whether it's percentage increases or actual dollar figures, seeing the growth adds a whole new level of clarity to your success story. ⭐ Answer the question: If asked about the innovation behind a strategy, it's crucial to be crystal clear about what sets it apart. Don't beat around the bush, highlight exactly what makes your approach unique and innovative. ⭐ Keep it simple: Don't drown your entry with unnecessary jargon or repeat yourself. Bullet points are your friend - make it easy to understand and engage with your message. ⭐ Attention-grabbing title: Give your entry a title that demands attention, whether catchy or a thought-provoking question. Make sure it hooks your audience right off the bat. ⭐ By the way, did you know China's big into art exhibitions? Their mall culture is next level, with tons of captivating displays—it's a whole scene. Have you judged awards or entered any? #steviesawards

Let me introduce the first Young Lions Competition Masterclass This is a free Zoom webinar designed to help prospective competitors make the best of their creativity and set them on the path to the Palais. Yes, the one in Cannes, France. So if you are planning to compete our local Young Lions Finland or if you have already pre-registered for it, this webinar will give you a good idea of what the local winning teams can expect from their final competition week in Cannes in June. This Masterclass will be covering questions such as "What are the Young Lions Competitions?" and "What does it take to win a Lion?". Interesting addition. Especially in the context of modern day marketing clutter begging for tools like humor to gain consumer attention. A specific category to recognize the best of humor will only inspire marketers around the world to bring out their max creative selves.
