Batteries, load factors and utilisation. Sounds like the start of a decent joke if you’re in the electric aircraft business. They’re also the biggest limiting factors to the success of the early electric vertical take-off or landing (eVTOL) aircraft industry. Overcoming them could bring passenger costs per mile down from about $3.50 to $1.50 as identified in the Eve Air Mobility and MIT paper Demand Potential for Urban Air Mobility (2020). By symbiosis creating the market demand required to scale production to meet said demand. This article, with the help of Cuberg's Gaetano Sciortino, Florian Allroggen from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and BETA TECHNOLOGIES, explores how these factors will limit the first generation of certified eVTOL aircraft and the possible solutions to overcome these barriers as the industry broadens. SkyDrive has secured additional funding after its previous Series C round via a third-party allotment of new shares to business partner, Suzuki Motor Corporation. This finance will accelerate the development and manufacturing of SkyDrive’s SD-05 two-passenger eVTOL aircraft. The company had already secured cumulative funding close to 15 billion yen (just over $103 million) from 13 different companies, by April 2023. Previously, in September 2022, the company had successfully attracted 9.6 billion yen, helped by MUFG Bank, one of Japan’s largest financial institutions, as well as new investment from Murata Manufacturing. The SD-05 is piloted with a maximum cruise speed of 62mph; has 12 propellors powered by 12 electric motors; with a range of up to 6 miles; and a flight time of close to 10 minutes. This makes SkyDrive a short haul aircraft compared to some of its longer range competitors. https://lnkd.in/ewDMav5S #skydrive #evtolinsights #japan #electricaviation #evtol #advancedairmobility #investment #funding #asiapacific
