Let's talk about Privilege...
'A special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group.'
The key word here is granted as opposed to earned.
To have privilege, is to hold certain advantages based upon a characteristic or status. Throughout our lives, while our characteristics can remain unchanged, our status can evolve. I'm an example of that and my work now helps me use my 'new earned privilege' to help others find bespoke solutions to combat the obstacles created by concepts that stand in the way of EDI.
In the workplace, privilege can exist in many forms: salary, promotional opportunities and the day-to-day treatment of colleagues, amongst other things.
While privilege cannot be avoided, it is often an underlying root of workplace inequalities. We all hold a responsibility to reduce the effects of privilege within our workplace if we wish EDI to flourish.
But, how do we better understand, measure and combat the 'unearned power of privilege' to foster equitable and inclusive workplaces?
At Diversity+, in collaboration with the The Law Society of Scotland we created the 'calculator of privilege', an interactive tool to help us understand and measure privilege with the aim to then challenge and find solutions to combat it.
The tool has been created specifically with the wider Scottish legal sector in mind but it can be adapted for other industries, individual organisations and teams.
If you'd like to learn more, book a demonstration and discuss how it can be used for your workplace EDI journey, please reach out to us:
