On August 4, we bid farewell to a legend who reshaped the destiny of industry and redefined India's tech revolution. N Vittal, an intellectual of exceptional understanding and practicality, breathed life into the IT services sector, forever altering the course of our nation. As we reflect on his legacy today, I am humbled to share my personal journey with this remarkable leader. N Vittal wasn't just a bureaucrat; he was also a great leader, passionate and willing to take risks if served a greater cause. Once he was convinced of the Indian IT services industry’s needs, he left no stone unturned to make it a reality. The idea that the government’s lack of interference fueled our IT industry's success is a misperception; he served as the catalyst. He came up with the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) scheme with the full collaboration of nasscom. This was his signature creation, which solved most of our problems – single-window clearances, tax exemptions, telecom bandwidth, and more. It virtualised the concept of EPZs, unburdening the government of the need for infrastructure, and campuses such as Infosys’s blossomed. That one master-stroke did more to unlock the industry’s potential than anything else. Vittal's commitment and drive have enabled our #IT industry to reach $250 billion, account for 25% of forex reserves, and create 10M+ jobs. He introduced the audience to the principles of E-Government, which include building stakeholder integrations, creating a unified database, modular development, and the standardization of systems for similar work. Dr. Jaffer highlighted how technological advancements have streamlined the delivery of government services, significantly reducing complexity and time, thereby enhancing the efficiency and impact of government initiatives. The impact of these advancements is profound. By leveraging technology, the Karnataka government is not only improving the efficiency of its operations but also enhancing the quality of life for its citizens. The streamlined processes and cross-departmental collaborations facilitated by technology are leading to faster, more effective service delivery, setting a benchmark for governance in the digital age.
