Quality of life. If one had heart issues, they’d see a cardiologist. A broken ankle, orthopedic surgeon. No one blinks an eye. Yet the thought of engaging the Palliative team on a life limiting or significantly impacting diagnosis a lot of times is seen as ‘defeat.’ Why? Why wouldn’t we want them on our medical team, walking alongside to ensure our wellbeing ‘as a whole human’ is kept at the forefront? Not just the sum of our parts. Quality of life. What we all strive for. What we wish for our loved ones. There’s also quality in dealing with LIVING with a diagnosis, and also, the less talked about - quality in death. Palliative doesn’t just exist for those dying, but also those living and planning to as long as they can. Engaging the team does not mean giving up, and studies show that engagement actually appears to add to a patient’s life, whether that be days, weeks, months, or years. Palliative allows trained medical professionals to uphold the wellbeing and symptom management of their patient and to provide QUALITY to their life —however that ‘quality’ looks. And to ask the hard questions —reminding us that just because we can, doesn’t mean we should. As the original poster mentions, “patients and their loved ones thank whomever engages Palliative when they do.” I wish I’d known then what I know, and had pushed to engage the team when I’d originally asked to, instead of being told ‘well, he’s not dying so there’s no need.’ There was need. It wouldn’t have changed the outcome, but it’s the little things, the human things, that could have been tweaked that would have made all the difference in the time we had. #palliativecare #qualityoflife #benefittoburden #palliativemedicine #healthcare #patientadvocate
Oncologists and other specialists are great at many things. However, as a palliative care provider, I can’t tell you how many times a patient and family says to me that they wished they could have had my guidance and support from the beginning. If you are a Physician, NP, PA of any specialty that works with people and families living with serious or chronic illnesses, please consider involving palliative care providers earlier rather than later. Your patients and their loved ones will thank you and not look at you as a failure. Thank you. #palliativecare #personcenteredcare #oncology #socialwork

After backlash, Federal regulators have abandoned a plan that risked limiting breast reconstruction options after cancer. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) wrote, "We recognize the importance of the patient-provider relationship and the practice of medicine in determining the most appropriate breast reconstruction procedure for each patient." #DIEP #breastcancer #breastcancersurvivor #mastectomy #breastreconstruction #brave #bravecoalition #bravecoalitionfoundation #cbsnews https://lnkd.in/eEUmkMCd
