In 2015, Jacob Stiglitz and I wrote an article for TechCrunch which was inspired, in part, by the experience of my “touchscreen generation” children. In it, we made the case that as “screenagers” they’d “expect immediate access to online homework help.” What I didn’t expect was that just a few years later, my now 13-year-old daughter would say: “hey Dad, my AI keeps giving me the answer; can you help me login to my tutor so I can actually learn?” (yes, that actually happened). This article takes a look at some of the most exciting applications of AI in education, from Nerdy's innovations in online tutoring to Dublin-based SoapBox Labs's work in early literacy. I draw a comparison between education and other fields where the human-machine symbiosis has unlocked powerful outcomes and solve for very complex challenges. Always appreciate Joe Lonsdale's thoughtful explanation of the concept - and link to one of my favorite of Joe's talks, where he explains the role of human-machine symbiosis in Palantir Technologies's origin story.

This week, I had the pleasure of chatting with Merissa Sadler-Holder about the importance of having a diverse network, the intersection of AI and education, and the ASU+GSV Summit. As we exchanged thoughts on the current state of education, our focus naturally gravitated towards teacher wellbeing and equitable access for all. We pondered the transformative potential of AI as more than a tool for reducing routine tasks but as a catalyst for innovation that can genuinely enhance educational accessibility. We talked about how to support more educators and administrators as they begin to view AI not merely as a technological assistant but as a co-creator of inclusive learning experiences tailored to each student's needs. The landscape of education-focused AI is rich with companies, each bringing subtle nuances to how they support learning and teaching. There is something for everyone. Educators are being bombarded with choices, potentially leading to cognitive overload and decision fatigue. The myriad options pose questions of cost versus benefit and challenge teachers to decide which tool is right for their specific educational contexts. Or perhaps the decision is made by administration and teachers have new tools that they would not have chosen to learn. In this dizzying array of possibilities, it's crucial to develop a culture where educators are supported in making informed choices. Clear, comparative insights and ongoing professional development can help mitigate the overwhelm and empower educators to select and utilize Edtech tools that truly enhance learning and align with their pedagogical goals. Will #Chatbots Teach Your Children? Sal Khan, the chief executive of Khan Academy, predicted last year that #ArtificialIntelligence tutoring #bots would soon revolutionize #education. “Mr. Khan’s vision for tutoring bots can be traced back in part to popular science fiction books like “The Diamond Age,” a cyberpunk novel by Neal Stephenson. In that novel, an imaginary tablet-like device is able to teach a young orphan exactly what she needs to know at exactly the right moment — in part because it can instantly analyze her voice, facial expression and surroundings. Mr. Khan predicted that within five years or so, tutoring bots like Khanmigo would be able to do something similar, with privacy and safety guardrails in place. “The A.I. is just going to be able to look at the student’s facial expression and say: ‘Hey, I think you’re a little distracted right now.
