Last month our Automotive, Corporate, Industry and Leisure (ACIL) team of 250+ people came together for a hybrid townhall meeting. Our EGM - ACIL Craig Fraser, Head of Product Karen Boparoy and GM Engineering James O’Carroll presented our new two-year plan to the ACIL team with people dialling in from Victoria, Western Australia, New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia. We also had leaders in each state spend time with their teams, discussing what’s ahead and what their key areas of focus are going to be. Ensuring that our people understand the role that they play and how their work contributes to our strategy is a really important way for us to make sure that we continue to make buying and selling a great experience and a great reminder for our teams that they are a big part of something big at carsales. #wearecarsales

This week, Leo Fransen and I visit the annual National Automobile Dealers Association show (NADA) in the US, this time in Vegas. Without any doubt one of the biggest automotive dealer events in the world, with just under 12,000 visitors this year. In addition to a large exhibition floor, there was also a lot of attention and time for 'education' based on many workshops around the topics that concern the US car dealer of today, and should help them further in the future. While there are certainly parallels with what we do in Europe, there are also really significant differences. Challenges we share are employee satisfaction, and especially staff retention. Recruiting new staff, and adapting to their changing demands in terms of working conditions and 'commitment to the job'. And we learned again today to look at our daily processes with different eyes based on the vision of Jon Taffer, a celebrity in the US with his programme 'bar rescue'. The lessons learned there are undoubtedly also applicable to our daily processes and way of working, very refreshing. Check jontaffer.com. And of course there is a focus on electrification, which is also being rolled out in the US. However, here it is yet to gain some steam, and differences between states are big. NADA is also clearly lobbying here to delay the targeted 67% market share of EV vehicles by 2032, mainly because the grid is not ready.
