OTC acetaminophen: responsible for 56,000 emergency department visits, 2,600 hospitalizations, and 500 deaths per year (NIH data) OTC alcohol: more than 178,000 deaths every year, played a role in at least 7.1% of emergency department visits (NIH data) OTC tobacco: more than 480,000 deaths every year or about 1 in 5 deaths (CDC data) OTC aspirin: A numerically higher rate of the secondary end point of death from any cause was observed with aspirin than with placebo. (NEJM 2018) OTC PPI (acid reflux drugs): Pooled mortality rate higher among PPI users compared with non‐PPI users; In Charlot et al, 2011, mortality increased during 1‐year follow‐up in people taking PPIs (NIH data) OTC NSAIDs: "From the first day of use, all NSAIDs increase the risk of gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding, myocardial infarction, & stroke." (NIH data) CBD: No deaths; Overdose = good night's sleep; Proven properties: anticonvulsant, anti-cancer, anti-anxiety, antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, anti-psychotic, neuroprotectant, analgesic, antioxidant, anti-addiction, cardioprotective, hepatoprotective, reduces chemo-induced nephropathy and neuropathy, stabilizes blood sugars. When does the stigma end?
As leaders in the genomic tools industry, we believe that the FDA's stance on CBD is misinformed. Our annual science and medical summit, CannMed, presents data that contradicts the FDA's position. We highly recommend that Robert Califf and other #FDA members attend the summit and learn from leading healthcare professionals and researchers in the field of medicinal medicine. CannMed has been an epicenter of breakthroughs, cutting-edge research, and transformative conversations. Attendees rub shoulders with industry titans and forward-thinking innovators. The summit attracts a diverse spectrum of attendees, from acclaimed scientists to passionate entrepreneurs. It's a melting pot of ideas and experiences, all aimed at propelling the industry forward. If you can't attend, all abstract driven past presentations are published for free in the CannMed Archive. Visit https://lnkd.in/eyPJNnU to review them. I'm delighted to share another research article that has recently been published online. "The impact of differently structured starch gels on the gastrointestinal fate of a curcumin-containing Nanoemulsion". The key findings of this study are: 1. The waxy corn starch gel disintegrated and emptied much slower than native and high amylose corn starch gels under dynamic gastric conditions. 2. Despite the differences in the gels' amylose content, glucose release was similar due to the differences in the emptying rate of total solids from the gastric simulator. 3. These differences in the digestion behavior of the gels led to a change in the rate of free fatty acid release and the delivery of curcumin into the intestinal digestion phase. As the DOI is now active I am happy to share that the advance copy of the 6th paper of my PhD is now out in Beneficial Microbes. In this study we explored the effect of the food matrix on the prebiotic efficacy of inulin-type fructans using a 10-day four-arm parallel randomised trial. Inulin was either supplemented in pure form or fortified into shortbread, milk chocolate or rice milk. The main takeaway from this trial is that the food matrix does not appear to impact on the bifidogenic effect of inulin-type fructans with similar increases seen across all four interventions. The trial was conducted during lockdown when volunteers were not allowed to visit campus or leave their houses. So, I ended up cycling 4500 km for this trial dropping off food products/supplements and collecting samples. If that is not dedication and passion towards advancing science I don't know what is. Unfortunately the paper is not open access so you will have to be subscribed to Beneficial Microbes to gain access: https://lnkd.in/ecjgCkaF I do still have a couple of authors copies I am allowed to share so drop me an email and I will see what I can do.
