Cedar Fair Entertainment Company’s Post

We’re excited that Cedar Fair and Six Flags will combine in a merger of equals transaction. We will be bringing together two iconic amusement park operators to create an expanded and complementary portfolio of 42 amusement parks and 9 resort properties across North America. We expect to combine our complementary capabilities to create a more robust operating platform. With a stronger financial profile, we’ll be able to increase investments in the things guests love – thrilling rides and attractions, broader food and beverage options, additional in-park offerings, and more. We are pleased that the combined company will also provide attractive upside for our investors, and exciting development and advancement opportunities for associates. At Cedar Fair, we’ve always been focused on making people happy by delivering amazing experiences that create lifelong memories. Together with Six Flags, we’ll be able to bring FUN to guests like never before. The merger agreement we announced today is a testament to the incredible work of the Cedar Fair team. We can’t wait for our next chapter together with Six Flags! Additional important information can be found at link below. https://lnkd.in/eWy-zZSn

I would like to be excited about this, but the reality is bad for the industry. Cedar Fair parks are premium properties with unique experiences. Six Flags parks are cookie cutter parks, expanded over parking lots. They plop rides down wherever they fit, often times clones of existing attractions elsewhere. The alure of Cedar Fair, is that going to different parks provides different experiences. Six Flags is like McDonalds - still pretty good, but they are all the same. I hope that Cedar Fair influences Six Flags, and not the other way around.

As a season pass holder and lifelong attendee of Cedar Point (CP), I’m hesitant to like this merger. CP has a rich history and tradition of over 150 years on the shores of Lake Erie. America’s Rock N Roller Coast! 😀 I admittedly don’t know much about Cedar Fair’s other parks, besides CP & Kings Island, or Six Flags parks. My only perspective comes from Six Flags purchase & re-naming of Geauga Lake/Sea World in Aurora, OH around the mid 1990’s/early 2000’s. It was a great family park that was ultimately shutdown ironically by Cedar Fair. I hope that Cedar Fair influences Six Flags more than Six Flags influences Cedar Fair like some of the other comments on here, but only time will tell. Best of luck to the new company.

As a Cedar Fair season pass holder, I'm curious to see how this merger will make an improved customer experience, or hopefully not degrade service

As a lifelong coaster enthusiast who grew up going to Cedar Point, this is incredibly distressing and sad. Six Flags parks have always felt lower quality and less charming. I hope their pattern of sneaking excessive advertising, monotonous and repetitive theming, and cheap, cost cutting measures such as 1 train operations stays far away from current Cedar Fair parks. Quite frankly, Cedar Fair parks this year already seemed to be going down a bad path quality wise and I hope for the sake of the industry, that this doesn't accelerate that trend. I want to be optimistic, but to be honest, this seems like nothing but bad news. Mergers like this rarely end up favoring customers and I don't think this will be any different.

I started out in the Amusement industry, and would love to have a chance to work on something corporate-level and hone the skills I'll be implementing after college. Think there's any room for me? Do you stay in business, year-round? Our park had nobody, not even personnel, payroll, or maintenance working after October. I just never stopped to see that these franchised parks must have corporate-level expertise and positions. Or are there only one or two? I'm curious about the day-to-day operations, and the business effects, too.
