College students—the future leaders of companies and communities—need an antidote for the corrosion of dualism (seeing complex issues not as gray, but only good or bad).   I would suggest empathy. The ability to understand the perspective of another is critically important, especially when you disagree with the other. Why do they believe what they believe? What is the positive thing they are trying to achieve or protect?    When I teach a class, I often pick a topic—something controversial, but not so much that students will have an emotional reaction. Recently, it was the utility of public subsidies for new Amtrak service in Ohio. I gave the students background information on the topic, then asked them what they thought. They were divided into a pro and con group, often assigned to the group that argued the opposite of their personal opinion. With the debate finished, we discussed what it was like—what they learned by being forced to take the perspective of another. Then we talked about how to apply that skill while living in a democratic society. #HigherEducation #Civility #Otterbein #CoalitionForTheCommonGood

As an academic interested in communication between local governments and their residents (and general fan of bikes), I'm digging this project website for the "Campus to Commons" shared-used trail that Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government (LFUCG) is planning. It's a good example of public communication by a local government with the intent of informing and inviting community input and engagement early on to improve project success. In addition, I think inviting folks to join an in-person feedback tour (likely by bus at this point) to see the route in real-time and under current conditions would be valuable too. This project sounds like a great addition for folks in that part of Northeast Lexington. Similarly, I look forward to the future Coldstream industrial development plan that will provide an easier and safer connection to the Legacy Trail from my neighborhood. The Lexington Area Metropolitan Planning Organization deserves a shout out too for their website. It has some highly visual and interactive maps detailing current and future projects for community members to explore. Seeing is believing and engaging content like this not only helps present project ideas and progress clearly but it also illustrates (literally) the important and challenging work of local planning. https://lnkd.in/ggB6maha

Green Washing: Electric school buses: 1. Do nothing to address the fundamental defect that roads make it unsafe to children to walk and bike to school. 2. Do nothing to reduce the energy burnt to move 2-tons to move a child. Following the 1973 Oil Embargo government car-centrix planning in the US, Sweden, and Denmark diverged. From the same per person safety and energy consumption in 1973 Sweden and Denmark worked to kill 400% fewer bike riders and pedestrians, and consume 60% less oil per person than US government policies. US policies continue sprawl and Green Washing like electric school buses instead of addressing the fundamental need to make walkable and bikeable cities. Radically unlike its neighboring cities, Palo Alto, CA made their streets safe and 56% of students bike to school.

The importance of Long Term Relationships with schools, allowing multiple interactions & across different year-groups 2. Students need real-world experiences with employers 3. Being able to track multiple interactions: for parents/carers, Ofsted and PAL reporting
