The American education system is in much worse shape than anyone will admit... The "MODERN" education system was birthed in 1830, with Massachusetts lawmaker Horace Mann and his advocacy for education for all children, free of charge, funded by the state. Here are some other things that were going on in the 1830's: SLAVERY. You can't argue that a system built DURING slavery DOESN'T have systemic racism... "Democracy in America," was published in 1835. Written by Alexis de Tocqueville after he spent 9 months touring America with Gustave de Beaumont in 1831. I think we can confidently say that the grand experiment that is to prove that "man may be governed by reason and truth" (Hamilton) is STILL alive and well. The first reported bank robbery in U.S. history occurs at the City Bank of New York on March 19, 1831. In 2022 alone, there were 1,740. Democrat Andrew Jackson is re-elected president over his opponents. The guy on our $20 bill was still president. The first attempted assassination of a U.S. president (Andrew Jackson) fails when Richard Lawrence's gun misfires on January 30, 1835. Somebody didn't like the guy on the $20 bill. Cyrus McCormick patents "Improvement in Machines for Reaping Small Grain" (a horse-drawn grain reaper) on June 21, 1834. We were still farming with HORSES people, not Deeres. P.T. Barnum begins his first circus tour of the United States on June 2, 1835. Is the sucker/born per minute ratio still 1/1? Seems a little higher these days... The Mexican Army and militia (loyal to Texas) battle for the Alamo from February 23 to March 6, 1836, in San Antonio, TX. Remember the Alamo. Literally. Remember it? It happened in the 1830's. Following months of increasing inflation and shrinking credit, the Panic of 1837 begins, causing widespread bank failures and unemployment. The more things change... During 1838, the forced removal of 15,000-17,000 Cherokee Indians from Georgia on the "Trail of Tears" results in an estimated 4,000-8,000 deaths. One event in a very long list of the humanitarian failures of the US government. Indigenous people of color are STILL the most marginalized people group in the world. Education is not the only thing that needs an overhaul. Charles Goodyear invents vulcanized rubber in 1839. TIRES, people. Tires were invented... On July 2, 1839, Sengbe Pieh and 56 fellow Africans mutiny aboard the ship La Armistad enroute to Cuba. The ship is captured off Long Island, NY, and the resulting U.S. Supreme Court case rules that since the importation of slaves into the United States had been prohibited since 1808, the mutineers are to be freed. This actually happened. It wasn't just Matthew McConaughy and Djimon Hounsou playing pirates with Morgan Freeman and Anthony Hopkins. We are still using the basic education structure, birthed in 1830... even now: ALMOST 30 YEARS after the birth of the internet. #Raise #Lions What is wrong with schools today? (part 4) ======================================== Post pandemic, asking for grades you didn't earn has become a hobby for some students. Worse yet, a majority of teachers reported that they gave in to these requests and inflated students' grades. I couldn't be more against this policy if I tried. As educators, it is our responsibility to prepare students for the real world. In the real world, you can't ask for a promotion or a raise without putting in the work. You can't ask for a passing grade without earning it. There are consequences for actions, or lack of action in this case. You can't be the victim of circumstances you choose to create. Let's raise lions, not victims. Let's teach our students that hard work, dedication, and accountability are key to success. It's not about getting a passing grade, it's about earning it. Apra Indiana is holding their spring conference on Thursday, May 2nd, 2024, at the Indiana Historical Society in Indianapolis, Indiana. The event will go from 8:30am – 3:30pm Eastern Time. This conference is an in-person event, so there will be time to network, enjoy food and beverages from a local catering company, and learn more about the world of prospect research. Our keynote speaker, Teresa Goddard, Director of Development Services at DePauw University, will be presenting on the topic of how prospect research informs the entire advancement operation. She is a charter member of the Association of Advancement Services Professionals and currently serves on the Board of Directors as Treasurer. In 2013, she received one of the first certifications in fundraising operations from Rice University. She earned her BS in management information systems from Indiana State University. In addition to hearing Teresa speak, we will have Chris Weimer, Director of Corporate Development from the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, speaking on prospecting without a natural constituency. Most nonprofit institutions do now have the benefit of refreshing their donor pipeline with tens of thousands of grateful donors year after year. While universities enjoy this benefit on a large scale, not all schools are created equal and beneath the surface lie several critical programs, divisions, and offices with little to no traditional alumni base to prospect from. This discussion will explore how to build a donor pipeline where no obvious constituency exists. To wrap up the day, we will have Clarissa Tester, Associate Director of Corporate Relations at Indiana University and Josh Moore, Director of Foundation Relations at Indiana University, speaking on prospect research in the corporate and foundation sector. The presentation will detail the different types of foundations and corporate giving arrangements along with their various types of contributions (grants, gifts, sponsorships, and more) to nonprofit organizations. It will review helpful sources of information for identifying prospects aligned to an organization and/or project. Finally, it will briefly review best practices for proposal writing and stewardship of organizational funders. I would love to see you there!
