To rejuvenate nursing, we must prioritize a safe environment, mend broken emotions, and fill empty hearts. Bullying and incivility in the healthcare arena is so prevalent that it often becomes the expectation of staff to be treated poorly. Problems often start at the top and trickle down to the bedside (or to faculty in academia) as leaders lead through intimidation, hold people back from performing within their fullest potential so that the leaders can be perceived as the smartest people in the room, utilize “teachable moments” as an opportunity to humiliate staff in a public forum full of their peers, gaslighting, micromanaging, and betraying trust by disclosing private information to others in the facility or specialty realm in an attempt to discredit the staff member. We can gradually change this environment through true servant and transformational leadership, acts of kindness, frequent recognition, genuine concern for staff that might be struggling, a trauma informed care approach to leading, and refusing to put up with bullying and uncivil behavior. We can facilitate change, no matter how small, and lead by example! Everyone can play a part in changing this culture. Be the change that you want to see!
