[THE OTHER BENEFIT OF WORKPLACE VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES] Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts recently published a piece about the value of volunteer opportunities at work, not just to support a firm's nonprofit partners and CSR goals, but to inspire a greater sense of well-being and connections among its #employees--especially in a post-pandemic work environment. The story comes in response to the Surgeon General’s recent report highlighting how civic engagement and #volunteerism can help combat the loneliness epidemic. "The need is great," writes Erika Small, senior communications manager at BCBSMA. "Mental health challenges, including #anxiety, #depression, and #substanceabuse have risen sharply since the pandemic, as half of all Americans report a sense of loneliness or isolation..." Meanwhile, an increasing number of U.S. employees now work remotely. "Employees are more connected than ever, technologically," explains Dr. Greg Harris, a psychiatrist and senior medical director of behavioral health at BCBSMA. "But some may feel more disconnected than ever, emotionally." Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship's Executive Director, Katherine Valvoda Smith, also weighed in on the piece. “Employers are increasingly seeking new ways to engage their employees,” Smith shared. "In a post-pandemic workplace, volunteering is a powerful tool to help your workforce feel not only connected to your company, but also each other."
