At the IEEE PES T&D meeting in Anaheim, CA this week, I’ve been so energized by the exchange of relevant findings and recommendations, collaboration with many on the feasibility and potential impact of implementing new technologies and strategies especially for FACTS and Digital Substation, identification of opportunities for further research, pilot projects, and partnerships to address specific challenges, and opportunities to integrate new knowledge and lessons learned. I’m especially thankful for all the excellent presenters, panelists, and people with whom I’ve been immersed in the great work at PG&E, partners of the IEEE, and Dantherm Cooling, Hitachi Energy, Siemens Energy, Smart Wires, and Trachte!

"On the first day of the IEEE PES DAY T&D Conference, standing room only remained for the panel session “3 AM Topics That Keep Our Executives Awake – A Multi-Utility / Multi-Disciplinary Perspective”. Evidently, conference attendees seemed eager to see what issues were atop the priority list of utility decisionmakers, including panelist Alfonso Mugueta, representing Avangrid as Vice President of Planning & Coordination. After this captivating session, Mugueta met with Energy Central to further reflect what he and his fellow panelists had shared, offering a truly panoramic view of the evolving landscape where technological innovation, policy imperatives, and climate resilience intersect. Mugueta shared his perspectives on a range of topics, from the urgent need for grid modernization to the imperative of talent development and collaboration among utilities. Throughout the conversation, several key themes emerged, echoing the broader discourse unfolding at the conference: the growing load and capacity constraints, the imperative to address climate change impacts in real-time, and the delicate balance between short-term reactions and long-term planning." How can CO2 advance CO2 emissions reductions? It may sound like a trick question, but our reimagination of the problem as part of the solution has been key to the success of our affordable, ultra-low-emissions decarbonization solutions. The need for creative thinking around the potential for CO2 to advance the energy transition (and how we can best accelerate CO2 emissions reductions) is why we’re excited to sponsor this year’s Supercritical sCO2 Power Cycles Symposium in San Antonio, Texas. We’ll highlight the Allam-Fetvedt Cycle, the first new power cycle invented since World War II, which leverages supercritical CO2 to achieve zero-emissions power. We also look forward to learning from our peers during panel sessions, keynotes, and technical presentations. What’s “The Role of sCO2 in the Global Energy Transition?” Come meet us at the conference and find out! Learn more about the Allam-Fetvedt Cycle: https://lnkd.in/d-HTbMqn

THINKING: Ocean Observation and Data Collection Devices: Given the importance of understanding marine ecosystems for climate research and conservation, our concept could involve the development of navigational energy-powered devices for ocean observation. These devices could collect data on parameters like temperature, salinity, and maritime-related life activity. The challenge would be to design them for long-term deployment and resistance to harsh marine conditions, possibly incorporating energy storage solutions for consistent operation. DOE Launches $1.7 Million Prize to Power Offshore Economy with Marine Energy - The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today launched the Powering the Blue Economy™: Power at Sea Prize, which will award up to $1.7 million to competitors to advance technologies that use marine energy to power ocean-based activities. The first phase, CONCEPT, will center on developing teams and sound concepts, awarding up to 20 winners from a cash prize pool of up to $200,000. https://lnkd.in/g62TpqEi

During the WNE 2023 we had constructive discussion with colleagues from Czech 🇨🇿 Tomáš Kořínek and Tomáš Jochman. Our main topics to consider in the future cooperation are SMR elaboration and virtual commissioning program aiming to create future shape of the energy efficient generation and using. I wish you both to suceed in your development https://lnkd.in/d3KycAnS

You are right, Michael! Copenhagen Atomics is developing a complex set of solutions to the elements of a super miniature Thorium reactor functioning on molten salt. The question is not if it can be dome, but how to optimize the complex design to realize a flexible energy power-house, by stacking single reactors, each the size of a Maersk Container. These folks are about to revolutionize production of green energy. Remember nuclear energy is green!!!!!!!
WITHOUT ENERGY, NO DEVELOPMENT AND NO SOCIETY! No matter what kind of society we want in the future, energy is required, and that energy must be cheap (-then we strengthen democracy) and it must be "green" (-then we strengthen the environment and climate). This sounds like an unrealistic dream. Fortunately, some dreams do come true, especially if you use them as inspiration for innovation and development. A group of Danes in copenhagen atomics have done that and YOU MUST spend 13 minutes and watch CEO Thomas Jam Pedersen's presentation of their proposal on how we can create cheap and sustainable energy, whether it is to be used for our Tesla or to run our Siemens Air Conditioning. Or perhaps even more importantly, how we ensure the sustainable development of THE WHOLE WORLD!

Actively seeking non-executive director and advisory/project roles which take advantage of my expertise and skills and make a difference to children, young people and the future of our planet.
Innovation in battery technology is essential for global energy security and tackling the climate emergency. Sounds like a great event. We need many more innovators, technologists and engineers to be addressing the complex problems the planet faces. Perhaps we can encourage some of the young people who achieved good A' level results today in STEM subjects to attend... Good to see strong take-up in maths (c. 97k students); computing - a great growth story with a 16.7% increase to 18,300 entries although not hitting great diversity yet with only around 15% women. But of course we're still struggling with stagnant entries in physics (c. 38k) and the very worrying decline in design & technology (c. 11k). Where will the engineers and technologists we need to tackle the great global challenges come from?
Better batteries are the key to unlocking access to reliable energy sources for 800m people across the globe. Chad Dupuis, P.E. You are always well respected by me, not just your technical knowledge in anything you touched, but the dedication and drive for “perfection” 💯! With your new role, I envision you will transit from more hands-on in MPAC projects to the strategic role that we have discussed in the fun realm of MPAC program. Digital Substation is a beast and there are many ways to skin a cat.. We have multiple things going on leading by different disciplines.. BUT-it will take a whole village to implement Digital substation environment - Digital MPAC pilot, utilizing IEC 61850..💡 Our organization structure is solid.. Engineering-Protection-Automation-Test.. and we have the MPAC program and Capital program to sponsor & execute the eventual Digital Subststion pilot, that follows the roadmap with the technical guidance by all the SMEs. Our Digital journey is not gonna be easy.. but gonna be exciting & fun!! 😀
