European Defence Agency (EDA) has launched the third phase of its Modular Lightweight Minesweeping Next Generation (MLM-NG) project. The main objective is to further raise the technology readiness level (TRL) of relevant systems and to demonstrate the use of modular lightweight minesweeping in an operational setting, building upon the developments within the first (2011-2014) and second (2018-2021) phases. This third phase, which has a budget of around € 9.2 million, brings together six Member States: Belgium, Germany, France, Finland, Poland and is led by Norway. The aim for future mine sweeping solutions is to develop and utilise smaller Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) with lightweight sweep sources. These sources can be operated with a single platform or by a formation of several USVs, depending on the operation. The previous, MLM-II project, developed technology demonstrators and proved the feasibility of the modular and lightweight concept for minesweeping. MLM-NG will use the results from the MLM projects and further develop the relevant technologies. The project will also look into tactics, procedures and the concept of operations for such systems. It is amazing that we have the capability to use UAS systems in highly hostile and hazardous environments. This gives us the ability to gather information without risking human lives. Aircraft like the MQ-9 are revolutionizing the battlefield and paving the way for new strategic operations. With additions like the Scalable Open Architecture Reconnaissance (SOAR) pod, these aircraft can detect and identify radar signals from long distances. This capability allows for effective stand-off surveillance, enabling the aircraft to gather intelligence without being shot down. Companies like General Atomics Aeronautical Systems are creating some of the most effective tools on the battlefield, and I am excited to see what the future holds for unmanned aviation.

Our recent demo at Massachusetts Maritime Academy in support of MassDOT showcased the flexibility of the American Robotics Optimus sUAS, which is the only FAA Type Certified Drone-in-a-Box. The fully autonomous and Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations highlighted the importance of asset management through various use cases such as critical infrastructure inspection, monitoring, perimeter security, and various maritime applications.  We continue to put safety first and foremost while demonstrating the versatility of our solutions across sectors and continue to illustrate the power of automated end-to-end data solutions in wide-ranging missions across defense, government, and commercial segments. The Joint Authorities for Rulemaking on Unmanned Systems (JARUS) are externally consulting PDRA-06, -08 and -10 till the 14th of November 2023. The PDRA-08 is providing the very first legal framework for Drone Light Show operators and manufacturers. This Pre-defined Risk Assessment will drive best practices around swarms during drone light shows in the future. The new MCRP 3-10.3 Small Unmanned Aircraft System Operations is available. -The crew that put this document together did an outstanding job. However, it is by no means complete and requires further refinement by all of those working on integrating these capabilities across the entirety of our MAGTF. Result of Directed Action 36 from the May 2022 FD2030 update “Publish a doctrinal publication on small unmanned aerial systems (SUAS) no later than 1 April 2023.”
