I despise ticket sales companies. Their business model/allowance or collusion with ticket scalpers is repugnant. “Who uses the devices?” “How are those devices being used?” These are the only two discovery questions I specifically tell new SDRs to ask to when they start to have conversations with prospects for the first time. At Jamf, the tech behind our products is intensive. We have over 75,000 customers due to the fact our solutions solve countless pain-points that any IT organization faces when dealing with end-user devices. These pain-points can range in complexity from a minor UX issue to dealing with a complicated API integration. With all of these potential use-cases, there is no way that a new SDR (or even a tenured one) could know every single use-case for Jamf’s products off the top of their head. 

 I’ve seen many SDRs focus on becoming tech experts right away. They will read up on every piece of learning material, white-paper, and product doc available only to find themselves in the weeds of a deeply technical conversation with a Infosec Admin… and it can get ugly. (I may or may not be speaking from personal experience here.)
 To avoid the scenario above, I encourage new SDRs to instead focus on 𝑤ℎ𝑜 the end-users are at these companies are and ℎ𝑜𝑤 they use their devices. Why? · It’s an easy concept to understand. · The SDR learns workflows that are relevant to an industry that's new to them. ·  It’s a great foundation to a deeper discovery of the customer’s need and ultimately leads to relevant follow-up questions. At the end of the day, an SDR's job is to tee up the Account Executive with a full picture of how an IT organization operates. As SDRs gain experience, they will start to ask more insightful follow-up questions, but the importance of understanding the customer’s IT strategy at a high level will never go away. 

 If you’re starting a new sales gig, go easy on yourself. Be curious and take advantage of your first few calls by learning everything you can about your new customers. Work with your AE or manager to figure out which information is most relevant later. Here’s how you hit $100K+/month in your agency like I did 2 different times: $0-10K/month: Manual outreach, work for free + performance based offer, get proof-of-concept for your offer, prioritize case studies/testimonials. $10-25K/month: Use social proof to start charging $$ upfront/retainers, do amazing work, keep doing manual outreach + make first hire (VA) and build systems for scale on back-end. $25-50K/month: Crack code on paid acquisition, delegate and scale outbound, prioritize systems + team, your margins should be good enough to pay a-players well… hire CSM (US based), consider bringing on appt setter who can transition to closing. $50-100K/month: Scale acquisition strategies working best for you - build out referral program, automate client acquisition systems, prioritize team management versus being bogged down in day-to-day ops. I hit $100K+/month in 2 different agencies I started. This is the formula. Follow it and you’ll be successful.
