Today in 1774 Joseph Priestly discovered oxygen in a laboratory. Fast forward a couple of hundred years and Stephen Covey tells us When you really listen to another person from their point of view, and reflect back to them that understanding, it’s like giving them emotional oxygen. How often to we really stop and listen to another person? We say we are listening, but what we are really doing is constructing a response in our head. We are great at fixing things, so often don't really hear what's being said to us, as we are working though our map of the world to give a response. Nancy Kline tells us the quality of your attention determines the quality of other people's thinking. To be able to really listen to someone is a great skill to have, one we should practice often. In my opinion, two of the greatest gifts you can give someone is QUALITY listening, listening with the absence of your own business, and REALLY hearing what a person is saying, not what you think they are saying! Today is Purple Day. Purple Day is an international grassroots effort, founded by Maritimer Cassidy Megan, and declared by The Purple Day Act in 2012, dedicated to increasing awareness about epilepsy worldwide. 1 in 100 people have epilepsy. Epilepsy is NOT a psychological disorder. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder of the central nervous system. If you witness a convulsive seizure, follow these Seizure First Aid steps: - Time it. Longer than 5 minutes, call an ambulance. - Explain what is going on. Ask to be given space. - Do NOT put anything in the mouth. - Cushion head and neck with something soft. - Roll the person to their side to prevent choking. - Do NOT restrain. - Clear the area of dangers. - Speak gently. Be kind during and after the seizure. The person experiencing the seizure will be groggy afterward.
