Recently, my house help asked for a pay hike. I gave her a laundry list of reasons why a hike wasn't in the cards although her work was spotless. She left me after a month. She was a Mary Poppins of mopping and exceeded expectations in many areas. When I had to take a meeting from home, she would proactively re-order her tasks in a way to cause minimal obtrusion. When the cleaning inventory needed restock, she would send me a voice reminder on WhatsApp in advance to avoid last minute rush. After two years, we were less like employer-employee and more like a well-oiled machine—she the gears, and I, the slightly clueless operator. After she left, I had to spend next 1 month looking for a new house help. The process was cumbersome and ate away my weekends between searching for candidates, scheduling interviews, reaching a mutual agreement on timings, negotiating salary (which turns out to be the same that my previous househelp was asking for 🙄), onboarding, test runs, and offer rollout. And I still need to spend a significant amount of time in coaching the new recruit. If I got a chance to 'Ctrl + Z', I would any day retain my previous house help by giving a hike! Lessons learnt? Sometimes, the best investment is in recognizing and retaining the 'gold' you already hold. P.S.: In this pic on third from left, we have Shivcharan uncle, our Ninja house help since last 20 years helping us through every major family function 😎 #payhike #appraisal #corporate #talent

Wondering what reasons you gave her. We also have a similar kind of person in the house and I ensure that she gets 10% of increment every year with yearly one months salary as bonus on festivals (Diwali and Eid) and many monetary help if she is in needs along with gifts on special occasions. Honestly, it doesn't cost me much if I compare to peace of mind she brings in our life. It's important that people who are nice and connected to us should feel happy.

‘Household Help’ ~ are possibly the least appreciated working class in the world! They are the silent warriors who win all those necessary yet thankless sisyphean household work ~ to make our lives more comfortable and run efficiently! Surely, their just recompense should go beyond salary to our commitment to look after their basic needs of family, like say: education, health emergencies, marriages and house construction! Gratitude and kindness, should be a bonus over and above fixed salaries to even out~ a give-and-take loyalty package of just and equitable compensation! 💐

You can order robots from Boston Dynamics for all household works. For mopping you can buy robotic vaccum cleaner and cleaning utensils you can order dishwasher from Amazon. That will do all the needs.

We give a hike to our house help and cook ever year just like we get a hike! 😊 It’s nice to share our growth with others who help with our growth 🙌

Lot to learn from this experience, Chetna! How we treat our employees and make them leave!!
