Do this in remembrance
Remembering Jayland Walker Today marks two years since the tragic death of Jayland Walker, who was taken from us far too soon. On this day in 2022, Jayland was fatally shot by Akron Police, a horrific event that left our community reeling and sparked widespread demands for justice. Jayland was fired upon excessively, over 90 times, an act that underscores the urgent need for reform and accountability within our law enforcement system. The Akron Urban League stands with Jayland's family, friends, and the entire community as we continue to mourn his loss. We remember Jayland not just as a victim, but as a human being whose life was cut short. In the wake of this tragedy, our community came together, marching and raising our voices to demand justice for Jayland. While the pain of his loss is still felt deeply, our resolve to fight for justice and systemic change remains stronger than ever. Let us honor Jayland's memory by continuing to advocate for a future where such tragedies are no longer a reality. We call upon our leaders, our law enforcement, and our community to work together to ensure that justice is served and that meaningful change is achieved. Rest in power, Jayland Walker. You are not forgotten. #JusticeForJayland #AkronUrbanLeague #SayHisName

💔 at least we are learning from this. I for one have gained massive knowledge in Fire Safety more so after completing my level 4 Diploma.
It’s been seven years since the fire at Grenfell Tower. Today, we’re remembering the 72 people who lost their lives and thinking of everyone affected by the tragedy. The anniversary offers a poignant moment to reflect on the changes we’ve made since, to ensure our homes are safe places for our customers to live. https://ow.ly/eHGs50Sib74

The skyrocketing evictions occurring nationwide are having an impact on people and their beloved pets. Overflowing animal shelters have also become a national crisis. The dip in adoptions along with the rise in dog intake from unclaimed strays and owner surrenders is a complete 180 from the surge in adoptions of dogs and cats we saw during the pandemic. According to Shelter Animals Count (SAC), stray dogs taken in by shelters have risen 6% in the January to November 2023 period compared to 2022 and are up a whopping 22% since 2021! 🌟 **Join the Movement: Clean the Block!** 🌟 Over the weekend, I had the privilege of witnessing something truly inspiring – the passion and dedication of individuals like O'Neil Hesson and SiSi Encarnacion who are leading the charge in the Dallas area with a mission called Clean the Block. Their initiative is not just about tidying up the streets; it's about revitalizing our communities and showing love and respect to our neighbors, especially the elders who have built the foundations of our neighborhoods. Think about it: our neighborhoods are reflections of ourselves. When we let litter accumulate, weeds grow unchecked, and obstructions clutter our sidewalks and streets, we're not just neglecting our environment; we're neglecting each other. But together, we can make a difference. O'Neil Hesson, President and Founder of The SERUN Foundation, and SiSi Encarnacion, a Community Engagement Strategist, are leading the way by tackling the top 10 code violations that plague our communities: 1. High Weeds 2. Litter 3. Obstructions in Alleys/Sidewalks/Streets 4. Unauthorized Signs in Public Right of Way 5. Bulky Trash 6. Substandard Structures 7. Junk Motor Vehicles 8. Illegal Dumping 9. Illegal Outside Storage 10. Graffiti These may seem like small issues on their own, but together, they contribute to a larger problem of urban decay and neglect. By addressing these issues head-on, we're not only improving the physical appearance of our neighborhoods but also fostering a sense of pride and community. Remember, "Don't Mess with Texas" isn't just an anti-litter campaign; it's a call to action to take pride in our great state and show love and respect to our fellow Texans. So let's roll up our sleeves, grab some trash bags, and join the Clean the Block movement. Together, we can make a difference, one block at a time. Are you ready to make a difference? Join us in cleaning up our neighborhoods and spreading positivity and love throughout our communities. Together, we can create a brighter future for all! #CleanTheBlock #communitypride #DallasStrong 🏙️💚

#WeRemember. The day our city was changed forever. Theresa is a remarkable example of resiliency, just like our city has been. If you get a chance, read her #SurvivorStory in the link below.
29 years ago, our community was forever changed. #WeRemember those who were killed on April 19, 1995, and pay tribute to the brave and selfless first responders who confronted danger head-on. We are honored to have Theresa Howell, a MACU staff member and Oklahoma City bombing survivor, share her remarkable story. Theresa believes good things come with tragedy — her faith only grew stronger after that fateful day: "I always look for the light in any dark situation because, with the grace of God, there is always light and His blessings." 🙏 Click here to read Theresa's full story: https://bit.ly/3Uojp0b
