This topic comes up on a future episode of Life Science Marketing Radio where we discuss the source(s) of the problem and some things that can help alleviate it.
Director of Business Development @ Aliri—Your Partner in Discovery & Clinical Research (Operating in the US & EU)
Forbes: “We’re Facing A Critical Shortage of Medical Laboratory Professionals” Is this shortage affecting you? How is your lab responding and preparing for the future? Summary: “Lab testing is the single highest-volume medical activity affecting Americans…Simply put, every time you enter a hospital or health care facility for care, your life is in the hands of a medical laboratory professional.” - Dr. Rodney E Rohde, SV, SM, MB (ASCP), FACSc, What is causing the shortage of lab workers? A survey of laboratory professionals by the American Society for Clinical Pathology showed that 85.3% reported burnout. An additional 36.5% complained of inadequate staffing and almost as many of a too heavy workload. The Bureau of Labor and Statistics “projects a nationwide need for a 13% average increase in medical laboratory technologists and technicians between 2016 and 2026, nearly double the underlying average increase in all occupations of 7%.” #automateyoursamples #moleculardiagnostics

The preanalytical phase in clinical laboratory technology is often overlooked, but it is a critical part of ensuring accurate and reliable test results. As someone who has worked in clinical laboratory technology for years, I wanted to emphasize the importance of this phase and share some tips on how to prevent preanalytical errors. Preanalytical errors can occur at any stage before the testing process, including sample collection, transportation, and preparation. These errors can lead to inaccurate test results, which can have serious implications for patient care. To prevent preanalytical errors, it is important to stay up-to-date with the latest technology and techniques. For example, using automation systems can help reduce the risk of human error during sample preparation and handling. In addition, phlebotomist awareness is crucial in preventing preanalytical errors. Proper training and education can help ensure that phlebotomists are aware of the potential sources of error and take steps to minimize them. Here are some additional tips to prevent preanalytical errors: 🩸 Properly identify patients and label samples correctly 🚚 Ensure proper transportation and storage of samples 🧪 Use appropriate collection and handling techniques 👩🔬 Regularly review and update protocols and procedures By prioritizing the preanalytical phase, we can ensure that patients receive accurate and reliable test results. Let's continue to educate ourselves and implement the latest technology to prevent preanalytical errors. #PreanalyticalPhase #ClinicalLaboratoryTechnology #PreanalyticalErrors #AccurateResults #PatientCare #AutomationSystems #PhlebotomistAwareness #TrainingAndEducation #SampleHandling #PatientIdentification #SampleLabeling #TransportationAndStorage #CollectionTechniques #ProtocolsAndProcedures #LatestTechnology #HealthcareTechnology #ClinicalLaboratoryScience #MedicalTechnology #HealthcareEducation
