How to put transformative research into a course. 👇
Today marked the 12th and final session of the FCL Global course in Zurich, offered to undergraduate students. Throughout the semester, over 20 presentations were delivered by both early career and senior researchers from FCL Global. The architecture students gained valuable knowledge during the lectures and seminars, not only about FCL's previous work through the assigned readings, but also about current research projects. They discovered how solar panels can enhance energy efficiency and how mobility patterns can be analyzed using machine learning. They explored how global governance and local densification shape urban development plans and objectives. The students also learned about adaptive planning, digital twins, transformative design, integrated urban districts, urban heat islands and green public spaces. All this was made possible by the dedicated and informative talks given by our esteemed presenters, to whom we would like to extend our gratitude: Thomas Schroepfer, Julio Paulos, Matias Quintana, Chenyi Cai, Meliha Honic, Dengkai Chi, Gabriela Debrunner, Fabien Clavier, Srilalitha Gopalakrishnan (Dr), Christoph Waibel, Alina Galimshina, Qiming YE, Rohit K. Dubey, Heiko Aydt, PhD, Nicolas Salliou, Philipp Urech and Naomi C. Hanakata (she • her). ETH Zürich #futurecities #futuregenerations #urbanplanning #design #pedagogy

Technical Officer Nature Based Solutions at Wetlands International | MSc International Land and Water Management & Climate Studies | Former President of IAAS 22-23 | Youth Advisor to the Netherlands Food Partnership
My MSc Thesis is one of the three finalists for the Folkert Hellinga Awards. In my MSc Thesis, “Pathways for peatlands: towards the completion of the 2030 and 2050 climate goals”, I developed scenarios on how the Dutch peatlands can develop and calculated the associated emissions. The study also analysed current government actions and hypothesised how Dutch peatlands could look in 2050. You can find the thesis here: https://lnkd.in/eiTEQ3fS I look forward to presenting my work to a larger public on the 14th of September as I believe peatland management is one of the pressing topics in land and water management especially the light of climate mitigation.
Save the date – 14th September – MSc Award On the 14th of September (afternoon), the Netwerk Land & Water hosts its annual Folkert Hellinga MSc Award ceremony! The location and further programme are to be announced. During this event, the finalists will present their theses, and the program will furthermore be filled by inspiring speakers. Students and professionals in the field of land and water management are invited to attend this event. After the official part, drinks and snacks will be provided. See you there!
