Remember: flooded roads are more than just a nuisance – they're dangerous. It only takes 12 inches of water to sweep away a car, and it's impossible to tell how deep the water is just by looking at it. So tragic to have another multiple fatal crash occurred on our national (state) highways. This headon crash was a result of one of the vehicles being on the wrong side of the road. At this point Police do not know why the vehicle crossed the centre-line. Whatever the cause a median barrier would have prevented the collision. I have recently reviewed a Japanese study where they had installed hundreds of kilometres of median barriers on rural two lane roads (much like many of our highways). The barriers had saved almost 200 deaths since they went in. Eliminated the head-on risk. On the TV1 news it was interesting to hear the Police officer say the current 100km/h speed limit was too high for an undivided road. Something safety professional have been saying for many years. The reporter then discussed the need to lower the speed limit on this section of road. But this is a bit like putting a flood bank in after the town has already had a flood and suffered all the damage. Prevention is important with floods as it is in road safety. Engineers don’t have to wait for events to occur. We understand the crash risks. We know the potential for this to occur on other parts of the road network is high. To prevent such crashes we need to put in a safety barrier. Lowering speeds will also lower the crash risk.
